Johnson racks up the points at the Mount
Following on from his historic maiden World Series Championship round victory last night a Murray Bridge Jason Johnson tonight racked up another swag of points towards the Championship at the Borderline Speedway in Mount Gambier.
Continuing the firsts for the Aussiefast Transport/STP Craft Disbury team the American Sensation set the tight Borderline Bullring alight during qualifying to capture the top qualifying position with a circulation of 11.813 seconds. His teammate Brad Heywood was a just under half a second behind but was 18th fastest in the tough competition.
After a good run in his opening heat race Johnson struck trouble in his second being forced out of the event with an electrical problem. He had however amassed enough points to be the fourth highest qualifier heading into the pair of dash races. Heywood put on a great display in his heat races moving forward and recording a second place finish in his final run to elevate him inside the top 10.
Both drivers had qualified with for the B-Dash to decide the outside starting positions for the 35-lap A-Main event. In the 6-lap journey Johnson crossed the line second and Heywood fourth but was later put back two spots for a passing move where he had been deemed to have used the infield, much to the New South Welshmans disgust.
At the start of the A-Main it all turned into a disaster for Heywood when he was forced into the wall when a car rolled right in front of him. After enduring severe damage to the front end and differential of his car Heywood was out of the event.
When the race finally got underway Johnson settled into third position several car lengths behind the leading due. At just under half race distance he was demoted to fourth as he battled with a not so perfectly set up Eagle Chassis.
For several laps he hounded the rear bumper of the third placed runner to no avail. With six laps remaining the caution lights were displayed to retrive a stranded car and Johnson was poised to pounce on his fourth World Series Podium finish. At the ensuing restart Johnson used the high groove to elevate himself into third.
He held onto this spot until the finish gaining valuable Championship points in the process.
Max Dumesny took the round win ahead of Shane Stewart and Johnson who was then followed by Robbie Farr and Jamie Maiolo.
The team will now spend a day preparing the 750+ horsepower Sprintcar in Mount Gambier before heading to Avalon in Victoria for the next round of the Championship on December 30th. -cdr-
