Mazdaspeed Posts Richest Scca Speed World Challenge Contingency Ever

SEBRING, Fla. (March 17, 2004) -- Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development, a division of Mazda USA, announced today the richest contingency payout structure in the history of SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge competition, with the winner receiving an additional $8,000 and payments of $1,000 or more down to 20th place.

The per-event posting offers a possible $46,400 to Mazda drivers--up from $18,000 in 2003. The number grows an additional 25 percent for teams that campaign the new Mazda 6, which is expected later in the season.

"SCCA SPEED World Challenge is an important series to us, and we want to support our teams in their efforts at the racetrack to prove that Mazda makes the best production automobiles," Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development's Steve Sanders said. "Our goal is for Mazda Proteges and Mazda 6s to run at the front, win races and win Championships. We're excited to be able to offer further incentive to accomplish this."

In addition to the base contingency schedule, Mazdaspeed will split an additional $15,000 between drivers finishing in the season-ending top-10, should Mazda take the Manufacturers' Championship Presented by Racer Magazine.

"The SPEED Touring Car Championship delivers the most relevant and competitive environment for manufacturers to showcase the cars that we see on the streets," SCCA Vice President of Marketing Garret Mudd said. "Mazda's commitment to supporting all of its Touring Car teams in their efforts to win the Championship highlights the important role that on-track performance continues to play in selling cars to today's enthusiasts."

The 2004 SCCA SPEED World Challenge Championships begin this week at Sebring International Raceway as part of the 52nd Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring Weekend. This Friday's race will be broadcast on SPEED Channel Sunday, March 21 at 12:00 noon (Eastern). To follow all the event action, including live timing, visit www.world-challenge.com.
