San Diego, Calif.- Michael Galati and Derek Bell will start fifth and thirteenth respectively for the last race of the Speedvision GT series being held in San Diego tomorrow.
Following his win in Las Vegas one week ago, Galati posted a time of 1:14.908 and 79.3 mph - good enough to start from the third row for the 45 minute race. On lap two of qualifying Galati spun and backed into the wall, slightly damaging the rear section of the Audi S4.
Teammate Derek Bell qualified with a time of 1:16.351 and a speed of 77.8 mph, good for a seventh row starting position.
The closed 1.53 mile street circuit is proving to be a simple drag race from corner to corner. The circuit is very hard on brakes and the tight confines should create a lot of caution flags for Sunday's race.
For the first time this season the Speedvision GT race will be televised live on Speedvision starting at 5:00 p.m. EST.
Derek Bell, Legends of Motorsport/Audi S4 Competition: "In qualifying we had a pretty good run, it is all very close. The circuit is tight so we have to rely on second gear much of the time, which is bad for us because there is a big gap in the rev range between second and third. The key will be to keep brakes under us, we need to conserve the car and keep it going to the end."
Michael Galati, Champion Audi/ Audi S4 Competition: "I had a bit of a moment on the second lap when I backed it into the wall ending up with only cosmetic damage. It went ok, we are starting fifth. After that I had a hard time seeing because the sun was low, maybe I could have gone a little bit faster."
Rod Bymaster, manager, Audi Sport: "This track is not an ideal layout for our turbo powered S4s. The straights are short and the big V-8s and V-10s have a definite advantage. We will have to be patient in the race and take advantage of mistakes by the other competitors."
