This weekend, Brandon Davis, 2009 SCCA Speed World Challenge Series champion, returns to action in his Ford Mustang GT for the Grand Prix of Long Beach. A resident of nearby Huntington Beach, the track at Long Beach holds a special place for Davis.
BRANDON DAVIS - driver, ACS Express Racing Ford Mustang GT
THIS WILL BE YOUR FIRST RACE OF THE SEASON. HOW DO YOU FEEL GOING INTO THIS WEEKEND'S RACE? "We feel pretty good. We gave some press rides last week and it was kind of nice to sit in the car again because we haven't really had the chance to do that. It felt good to get back in the car and get the seat time again. Basically the Long Beach event itself, is our big event because the shop is based out of Huntington Beach, which borders Long Beach. For me personally, I've been going to the race since I was eight or nine years old. The event itself is one of the biggest races we do all year and we're excited to go out and participate for another year."
HAVE YOU BEEN ON THE TRACK SINCE YOU WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP? "We did the media day rides, which is a little bit different because we don't go as fast as we can because obviously you have someone in the passenger seat. It's definitely nice to kind of get broken into it again because you do go around the track and the feeling starts to come back at least."
ARE YOU RUNNING ANY MORE EVENTS ON THE SCCA CIRCUIT THIS YEAR? "As far as the World Challenge is concerned I don't think we'll be doing any more races in that this year. We're looking toward some other projects that will probably come to life later this year, but as far as the 2010 race season, we're not going to compete for any championships this year."
WHAT ARE THE KEY CHARACTERISTICS OF LONG BEACH? "Other than the fact that it is a street race, there's not really any room for mistakes. If you make a mistake, it means the car is crashed because there are walls everywhere. You kind of keep that in the back of your head going into the weekend. At the same time you want to run hard and beat the competition. It's really kind of a fine balance and hopefully we can walk that line."
