Leighton Reese qualifies the Banner Engineering Corvette C-6 7th for Round 5 of the SPEED World Challenge GT Series at Cleveland
Cleveland, Ohio: (June 26, 2005) Leighton Reese of Minnetonka Minnesota qualified in 7th position at the race track that temporarily occupies the Burke Lakefront Airfield here on the shores of Lake Erie in downtown Cleveland.
Leighton's best lap, 1:18.194 for an average speed of 96.958 mph, was his 9th on the track which is unusual for a World Challenge GT qualifying session where usually a driver's first hot lap is his best.
"I had one decent lap going right when the tires were good and caught traffic in the esses so I aborted that lap," Reese said. "Then I had another decent ride going but caught I Tom Oates in turn 8 and went for a ditch ride trying to go around the outside of him."
"They told the lead 5 cars but no one told cars 6 through 30," Leighton Reese said after the race. "Angelelli went blasting past me so I picked up the pace and by the time we got to turns 5 and 6 there were cars 2 and 3 wide!"
Traffic was an issue in qualifying but Reese feels comfortable that based on his practice and qualifying lap times his Banner Engineering Chevrolet Corvette C6 can run with the leaders in Sunday's SPEED World Challenge GT race.
"Looking at the times I think that we can run in the top five today," said Leighton as we sat in the lounge in his transporter.
"Hey, we have to go right to the front," crew chief Joe Kantarik shot back. "Let the guys who are worried about chasing points ride around in 5th or 6th. I didn't come here for points I came here to win!"
Leighton looked over at Harry Schwartz and smiled saying, "Man you just gotta love my crew chief don't you!"
The SPEED World Challenge GT cars race for real, finally, at 4 PM today, Sunday June 26th for 50 minutes of the usual GT madness that makes drivers smile, laugh, cry and scream but it always leaves the fans screaming for more!
The race can be seen on tape delay on SPEED TV at 5 PM ET today, Sunday June 26th. Don't miss it!
