Speed World Challenge preview for the Fry's Electronics Sports Car Championships
MONTEREY, Calif. (Sept. 1, 2003) - Thrill-a-minute, paint swapping, heart-stopping racing makes the SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge a fan pleaser and the Fry's Electronics Sports Car Championships September 5-7 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca should add to that legacy.
Bill Auberlen comes into the weekend leading both classes - GT and Touring Car - of the Speed World Challenge but anything can happen in the large fields (often 40 cars) and often does.
The Touring Car class features some of the hottest sport compacts on the street today - Mazda Protege, Acura RSX, BMW 325 and Nissan Sentra. The GT class includes the powerhouses of traditional road racing - Porsche 911, BMW M3, Audi RS 6, Dodge Viper and Chevy Corvette ZO6, among others.
In Speed GT, Auberlen has won three times in his BMW M3 en route to an 18-point lead in the championship, 181-163 over Phil McClure in his Corvette ZO6, who has a pair of wins. Randy Pobst is keeping the pressure on in his Audi RS 6 with 160 points.
Auberlen also has three victories in Touring Car in his BMW 325i, accumulating 206 points to 145 for runner-up Pierre Kleinubing, who has a pair of victories in his Acura RSX-S. Ken Dobson of Carmel Valley, a fan favorite at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, is currently fifth in his 325Ci with 114 points.
Part of the appeal of the Speed World Challenge is the cars more closely resemble what fans can purchase off the showroom floor. However, add sleek, aerodynamic aftermarket bodywork, bolt on the meanest anthracite and alloy wheels with Toyo high-performance tires, give them more than enough ponies under the hood to blow the doors off your street car and now you can see why the series is one of the best entertainment values in American motorsports.
The Speed GT race is set for Saturday, Sept. 6, at 3:35 p.m., while the Speed Touring Car race takes the green flag on Sunday, Sept. 7, at 3:05 p.m. Both races are 50-minutes in length.
In addition to Speed World Challenge action, this weekend's racing includes the American Le Mans Series, Star Mazda Series, Mazda Miata Cup and World Super Karts.
Ticket information for the Fry's Electronics Sports Car Championships September 5-7 is available by calling 1-800-327-SECA or logging on to laguna-seca.com or ticketmaster.com.
