Team Cadillac Closes Successful Debut Season in SPEED GT
Angelelli finishes seventh at Laguna Seca
MONTEREY, Calif. -- The Cadillac CTS-V racing team closed a highly successful debut season in the SCCA SPEED World Challenge GT Championship on Sunday. Max Angelelli was the top Cadillac finisher in the SPEED GT race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, crossing the line 7th.
"It was an exciting finish to a successful season," said Karen Rafferty, marketing manager for Cadillac V-series and Cadillac motorsports. "Andy was incredibly quick early before his spin. Then Max took up the charge and again made things exciting, but he didn't have enough at the end to reign in the Audis. All of Cadillac and General Motors are very proud of the effort put forth by the team all season. Although we didn't win the championship, the season was an unqualified success as a result of three wins and the enthusiasm generated with our customers, dealers, fans and employees."
After three victories and four podium finishes, the black Cadillacs fell just three points short of Audi for the Manufacturers' title. Sunday's race was not without incident and unfortunately, the top Cadillac runner, Andy Pilgrim in the #8 CTS-V, suffered significant body damage on Lap 17 when he went off course and into the tire barriers. Pilgrim retired and left Max Angelelli to challenge for the lead. Angelelli picked up positions and ran as high as sixth; Olivier Beretta won the Sunoco Hard Charger Award, finishing 17th after starting dead last following a post-qualifying engine change.
"We have a great car and a great team so it is frustrating for us not to win the championship today," said Angelelli, who finished third in the Drivers' Championship. "The team has worked very hard and I am proud to be able to be here."
Andy Pilgrim finished fifth in the Drivers' Championship for the season.
"I'm very proud of my first season with Cadillac," said Pilgrim. "We won three races and made a huge impression for the fans. I'm very proud to be a part of it. We pushed the reigning champions right until the last race and for that we shouldn't be too disappointed."
Olivier Beretta was able to move up 16 positions during the race and thanked the Cadillac team for their ability to give him a proper race car to drive.
"I am happy that I was given the opportunity to race the CTS-V for Cadillac," said Beretta. "This is a great team--they have always tried to give me what I want in the car and each time I drove it, it was better. If they call me to come back and drive the car again, I'd do it."
