Jonsson's BMW Paces Speed Touring Car Practice at Mid-Ohio

LEXINGTON, Ohio (June 25, 2004) -- Sweden's Nic Jonsson, who resides in Buford, Ga., was the fastest car in practice for this weekend's SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Championship Round Three race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Matt Plumb, of Newport, R.I., and Brazil's Pierre Kleinubing completed the top three.

Driving the No. 27 LectricAir/Tecmark Corporation BMW 325Ci out of Walter Swick's nearby Tecmark Autosport shop (Mentor), Jonsson ran a fastest lap of 1:34.831 (85.718 mph) around the 2.258-mile circuit in the second session, the only completely dry portion of the day.

"The car is really good and the guys have done an awesome job to prep the cars to come here from Lime Rock," Jonsson said remarking on his fast practice session. "Unfortunately, I missed the test day yesterday, so we only had like one and a half sessions under dry conditions. My engineer has done a great job setting up the car. We are still fine tuning it a bit. We've got to change a few things for qualifying tomorrow and hopefully find a few more tenths. And, hopefully I will get a chance to get my first pole in this series."

Driving the No. 42 A-Spec/RealTime Racing Acura TSX, Kleinubing was the first driver officially in the 1:35 range, but it was teammate Plumb, in the RealTime Racing/SANZ/Sun Microsystem entry that edged him for second place with a 1:35.325 (85.274 mph). Kleinubing followed with his lap of 1:35.432 (85.179 mph).

Point leader Bill Auberlen, of Rolling Hills, Calif., was fourth in his BMW 325i, followed by the Mazda Protege of Jeff Altenburg.

Qualifying for the Air Force Reserve Pole Position is set for Saturday morning at 10:40 a.m. (EDT), with the race scheduled to make its standing start at 4:40 p.m. Live Timing and Scoring Presented by Cadillac for both sessions can be viewed live at www.world-challenge.com. The race will be broadcast Sunday (June 27) at 12:00 noon (EDT).
