Pobst, Cunningham and Stout Take Saturday World Challenge Poles at Mosport

CANADA (May 22, 2010) -- Randy Pobst, of Gainesville, Ga., earned his third World Challenge GT Championship pole of the season for this afternoon's Grand Prix of Mosport Presented by Optima Batteries, part of the Victoria Day Speedfest. Peter Cunningham, of Milwaukee, Wis., and Robert Stout, of Brownsburg, Ind., won the GTS and Touring Car poles, respectively.

Driving the No. 6 K-Pax Racing Volvo S60, Pobst turned a fast time of 1:23.439 (106.094 mph) on his second flying lap around the 10-turn, 2.459-mile circuit. Teammate Andy Pilgrim, of Boca Raton, Fla., did one more fast lap to try to take the top spot in his No. 8 K-Pax Racing Volvo S60, but fell 0.047-second short of the fast time.

"I wouldn't have changed a thing on my Volvo, it was perfect," Pobst said. "We actually had a chance to fine-tune on the handling for the first time in a long time this weekend. We've chased a lot of mechanical issues, and the K-Pax team has burned a lot of midnight oil to make the cars better and better.

"I'm so happy, ever since we got here my Volvo has been great through these Mosport corners. I drove it perfectly, it ran good, and I said to myself that there's no way anyone can beat that time, I'm on the pole. Then we came in, and Andy [Pilgrim] was right there, a few hundreths behind me. I said 'Rats!' I was so disappointed. But I've known Andy for years, and he's the best. I'm still happy to be that smidge ahead of him. It's a testament to our K-Pax team.

"You never know what's going to happen in the race, though. I like our chances with the all-wheel drive Volvos if it rains, but we'll be ready to go anyway. It's what makes World Challenge races so great, you know that Porsches and Vipers and Corvettes are going to be there at the end."

After leading practice in his No. 13 Dodge Motorsports Dodge Viper, Montreal's Kuno Wittmer could only manage third fastest in qualifying, turning a 1:24.075 (105.292 mph).

Patrick Lindsey, of Santa Barbara, Calif., led the Porsche contingent in the No. 57 Horton/Sloan Securities Porsche 911 GT3, qualifying fourth with a 1:24.087 (105.277 mph). Defending race winner Jason Daskalos, of Albuquerque, N.M., will start fifth in the No. 5 Daskalos Developments Dodge Viper after turning a lap of 1:24.340 (104.961 mph).

Cunningham led both GTS practice sessions in the No. 43 Acura/RealTime Racing Acura TSX, and parlayed that speed in his third pole of the season with a 1:30.408 (97.916 mph). His time edged the No. 35 Torvec/Phoenix/Hawk Chevrolet Corvette of John Heinricy, who ran a 1:30.635 (97.671 mph).

The class' most recent winner, Tyler McQuarrie, of Walnut Creek, Calif., will start third in the No. 19 LPL/DRS/Switcars/LCS/Dayco/M&T Lotus Exige S after turning a quick time of 1:30.878 (97.410 mph).

Like Cunningham, Touring Car point leader Stout was fastest throughout practice and captured his first-career World Challenge pole with a fast time of 1:35.442 (92.752 mph) in his No. 18 DG Spec/Scion/TRD/Lucas Oil Scion tC.

Teammate Tom Lepper, of Benicia, Calif., made it an all-Scion front row, turning a 1:36.145 (92.073 mph) in the No. 36 DG-Spec/Scion/TRD/Lepper & Associates Scion tC.

"The VWs came out here running real strong this weekend, and this morning we made a few minor changes and were able to get back on top," Stout said. "The team's been awesome setting up this car the whole weekend.

"I think it's great to be able to put both of our Scions on the front row. We both found a lot of speed today, we put them both on the front row of qualifying, and it only helps my chances of getting through the first few turns of the race with someone beside me that I know and trust.

"We're not sure about the weather, but I'm pretty confident about my ability in the rain. I think our team has a good idea how to set-up the car if it does rain, so we'll see what happens. I think we'll be ready to go either way."

Greg Shaffer, of Harrisonburg, Va., led the Volkswagen contingent in his No. 49 Irish Mike's Racing Volkswagen Jetta GLI in third, posting a fast lap of 1:36.267 (92.957 mph).

Today's Round Four race is scheduled to make its standing start at 3:15 p.m. Eastern. Follow live timing and race notes at www.world-challenge.com.
