TeamRTR Nissan Gets Pole, Punted
August 8, 2004 - Bowmanville, Ontario - Peter Cunningham's TeamRTR Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V won the pole position for today's SPEED Touring Car Championship series race at Mosport International Raceway, with the fastest lap ever recorded by a Touring Car in the 15 year history of the series - 98.702 miles per hour.
But at the drop of the green flag for the seventh race of the season, "The third place car thought he saw a hole to drive through," said Cunningham. "Unfortunately, that 'hole' was occupied by two cars who qualified faster than he did. Either of them could have won the race, but neither one did. A minimum of six cars were adversely affected by the melee, with three of them failing to complete more than three laps."
The errant driver plowed into the right rear of Pierre Kleinubing's Acura, causing it to careen into the path of Cunningham's Nissan, bouncing Peter off the concrete pit wall only a few yards past the start line.
"The biggest problem was the toe-in was at about 1.5 inches after the crash, and that's substantially more than we like to run on the Nissan," Cunningham added. "The TeamRTR guys did a great job hammering it straight, but I'm still amazed the car ran as well as it did for the rest of the race, allowing us to score five championship points for the 23rd place finish."
The good news for TeamRTR is that the next race, on August 22, is at Road America, a short drive up the road from the team's shop.
"Last year at Road America, the team pulled together in an unbelievable way and made it possible for us to win Nissan's first Touring Car pole, and its first race," Cunningham said.
"We've tested the NISMO Sentra at Road America this year, so we know the track's characteristics like we know the contents of our tool boxes, and we look forward to performing well in front of our families and friends, most of whom only get to see us race once a year," he noted.
Cunningham maintains sixth place in the Touring Car points after today's result, and Nissan remains third in the Manufacturers' Championship points chase.
Today's Mosport event will air on SPEED TV, Sunday, August 15 at Noon (EST)
