Cadillacs Practice in Hot Conditions in Portland
Racers face 100-degree temperatures on 12-turn road course

PORTLAND - The General Motors' Cadillac CTS-V racing team returns to the track this weekend at Portland International Raceway for Round 5 of the SCCA Speed World Challenge GT. Cadillac drivers posted the fourth and fifth fastest times in warm conditions on Friday. Four races into its debut season, the Cadillac team trails Audi by just one point for the Manufacturers' championship approaching the halfway mark in the season.

"We have made the most of our track time and the balance of the cars is still improving," said David Spitzer, program manager for the Cadillac CTS-V race car. "As usual our team and drivers are working well together. It should be a little cooler for qualifying tomorrow and we'll see if we can get our guys up front."

During the first session on the track on Friday morning, drivers Max Angelelli and Andy Pilgrim set the fourth and fifth fastest times, respectively. In the afternoon the team made changes to shocks and sway bars, ride heights and wing adjustments in order to manage tire wear in the hot conditions.

"I call this a fingertip track," said Pilgrim. "You work the car with your fingertips, careful not to give it too much throttle or too much brake. It's very, very hot on the track. On one hand it's slippery but at least it's the same for everyone. Our cars have great braking stability and the longer we went, the more consistent we got. We're excited for qualifying."

Teammate Max Angelelli commented on the warm conditions.

"I'm happy and the car is good," said Angelelli. "We made some shock changes to make the car last longer on the tires. I think the heat is better now that I have a cool suit. It's very slick on the track and should be exciting to watch."

The raceway complex, which also includes a drag strip, is used nearly every day of the year for amateur and club racing events, testing, driving schools, etc. The long history of the raceway includes IMSA-sanctioned events in the former Camel GT Series in the early 1990s. The site sits on the former location of the World War II city of Vanport, which was wiped out by a flood in 1948. The Army Corps of Engineers sold the site to the City of Portland in 1960 and in 1961 the first Rose Cup races were held.

Team Cadillac will qualify on Saturday at 9:45 a.m. for Sunday's World Challenge GT race.
