Cool temperatures with sunny skies played right into the hands of teams competing in both the GT and Touring car divisions of the second round of the SPEED World Challenge participating at the Mohegan Sun Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park.
After struggling with changing weather and track conditions in yesterdays practice sessions, teams in both classes showed Saturday's crowd what makes World Challenge great.
Randy Pobst driving the #1 Audi Certified Pre-Owned RS6, shattered the track record in the GT class with a 0:54.362 (101.320 mph) on the 7-turn, 1.53-mile circuit. Mike Galati, his teammate, will start second with his time of 0:54.445 (101.166 mph). Local driver Michael Culver (#14 First Racing Porsche 911) will start third. Culver had been the fastest in both GT practice sessions on Friday.
Pobst had held the previous GT qualifying record at 0:58.759 (93.738 mph). That time would have only been good for 25 position on this years starting grid.
In the touring class, Bill Auberlen in the #1 Turner Motorsports/H&R Springs BMW 325i, broke the previous qualifying record of 1:01.137 turning in a 57.678 at 95.495 miles per hour. 27 cars went faster than the previous record.
Many teams were giving credit to the new Toyo tires but the caveat still remains the question of the weather. Will Monday's race be wet or dry?
Mat Plumb will start his #43 Real Time Acura in second and his team-mate, Pierre Kleinubing (#42) will start third.
Monday's SCCA SPEED Touring Car Championship Round Two race, part of the Mohegan Sun Grand Prix, is set to make its standing start at 2:10 p.m. EDT. In all, 43 cars will make the start on the 1.57 mile road course. The race will be broadcast on SPEED Channel Sunday, June 6 at 12:00 p.m. EDT
Monday's Round Two GT race will make its standing start at 12:10 p.m. EDT and will be broadcast at 1:00 p.m. EDT, Sunday, June 6 on SPEED Channel.
