UPTON WINS WILD SPEEDVISION GT AT ROAD ATLANTA

BRASELTON, Ga. - Kermit Upton III, of Ludlow, Vt., took the lead two laps from the end to win a wild first Speedvision GT Championship race on a doubleheader weekend at the Road Atlanta Southern Dash. Polesitter Bill Cooper, of Manhattan, Mt., and Bobby Archer, of Ft. Worth, Texas, completed the top-three. Archer took the lead in the No. 32 Viper Speed Dodge Viper from his second starting position and stayed out front for the first 26 laps of the 28-lap, 70.0-mile contest until Cooper made a move in the downhill turn 10. Cooper slid his No. 75 Pirate Racing/Les Stadford Chevrolet Corvette into the lead, but Archer came back side-by-side heading into turn 11. The two touched and lost momentum, allowing Upton III to challenge in the No. 26 Mountain Auto Sport BMW M3 as the three went three-wide into the last turn. Upton used his momentum to move out front, where he stayed for the final lap, beating Cooper to the finish by 0.965-second to average 79.452 mph. The 52-minute, 51.700-second contest was Upton's first win since 1997. "I've been away since 1997 trying to put a proper budget together," said Upton III. "It's great to be back. I tried to time it so car wouldn't hold me up on the exit. I proved I can come back and run up front again." Cooper finished second for the second time this season and moved into third in points, with 92. "We're racers and that's what its about," said Cooper. "We're glad to have Kermit back in the series. I think it's some great racing and this one was good for TV." Archer maintained his point lead, 120 to 101 over George Biskup, who finished sixth. Archer also turned the race's fastest lap of 1:35.815 (93.931 mph). "Two laps to go I thought I had a flat and radioed in," said Archer. "My brother said there were two laps to go and to hang on. I didn't know if I could, but we did and maintained the points lead." Mid-Ohio winner Peter Kitchak, of Excelsior, Minn., finished fourth, followed by Reese Cox, of Marietta, Ga. The finishing order from the race will be used as the starting order for Sunday's second race of the weekend.
