CTS-V Race Cars Complete First Day of Practice in Sonoma
Angelelli and Pilgrim look for victory in California
SONOMA, Calif. - The General Motors' Cadillac CTS-V racing team returns to the track this weekend at Infineon Raceway for Round 4 of the SCCA Speed World Challenge GT. Cadillac drivers posted the second fastest time in the first session and the fourth fastest time in the second session in clear, warm conditions on Friday. Three races into the 2004 season, Cadillac holds the second position in the manufacturers' championship while Max Angelelli sits in second place in the battle for the drivers' title.
"Things are going well here in Sonoma," said David Spitzer, program manager for the Cadillac CTS-V race car. "Not everyone ran new, sticker tires in the morning and the afternoon was much warmer. Since we qualify and race in cool conditions, tomorrow will give the best preview of a relative pace. In the second session, Andy suffered a rare failure-luckily the car is fine and we don't expect any further trouble."
During the first session on the track on Friday morning, drivers Andy Pilgrim and Max Angelelli set the second and third fastest times, respectively. In the afternoon the team made small changes to the cars' setups and Angelelli set the fourth fastest time; Pilgrim brought his car back to the pits on his first timed lap after a suspension failure on Turn 1 brought a premature end to his practice session.
"The cars were very good this morning," said Pilgrim. "In an attempt to remove some understeer we made a few changes to our setup for the afternoon. Unfortunately we weren't able to learn much after my incident at Turn 1, so qualifying tomorrow will be a bit of a gamble. No doubt, it will be exciting for the fans to watch."
Pilgrim's teammate Angelelli said that he feels he has a good chance on Sunday's race.
"The car is good and I think we are going to be competitive," said Angelelli. "We made some little changes to the car and adapted the Cadillac to the conditions for practice. I am looking forward to qualifying."
Team Cadillac will qualify on Saturday at 11:15 a.m. for Sunday's World Challenge GT race.
