CENTENNIAL, Colo. (October 9, 2001)-The SCCA Pro Racing Speedvision World Challenge Championships have released their 2002 GT and Touring Car season schedules. The schedule features five common venues to the 2001 schedule, with three brand new venues and the return to three fan favorite events. Venues returning to the schedule after a World Challenge series hiatus are Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Road America and Le Circuit Trois-Rivieres. Brand new venues and events include street races in Miami, Fla. and Washington, D.C. and the picturesque Virginia International Raceway. Carrying over from the 2001 schedule are events at Sebring International Raceway, Mosport International Raceway, Lime Rock Park, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and Road Atlanta. The series kick off the 2002 campaign with the historic 50th Annual Mobil1 12 Hours of Sebring American Le Mans Series weekend, scheduled for March 12-15. It will be the second-ever appearance at the 12 Hours of Sebring, where Peter Cunningham broke the all-time World Challenge wins mark in 2001. From there, the series travels with the ALMS to Miami, Fla. for the rebirth of the traditional street race, April 5-7. For the 11th time, Mosport hosts the World Challenge on the traditional Victoria Day Weekend, May 17-19. One week later, Lime Rock Park welcomes the series for the traditional Memorial Day weekend, May 24-27. Mid-Ohio, which hosted four previous World Challenge events, the most recent coming in 1999, returns to the schedule on the ALMS June 28-30 Weekend. Absent for three years, Road America returns to the slate for the eighth time, with the ALMS, July 5-7. The inaugural National Grand Prix, Washington, D.C. street event is next up, July 19-21 with the ALMS. The Grand Prix will be run completely in RFK Stadium parking lots, and will be the first major sports car race ever in the nation's capital. The two series go their separate ways for Round Eight, with Speedvision GT returning to Le Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres for the first time since 1999 for the August 2-4 ALMS weekend. One week later, August 9-12, the Speedvision Touring Cars return to Mosport for the second time of the season, this time with the ALMS. The series begin a West coast swing beginning with a September 13-15 event at a venue to be announced. September 20-22 marks the return of the series to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the third-straight season with the ALMS. Tentatively, both series plan to return to the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, October 2-4. The season finales will be hosted, for the first time in series history, at Virginia International Raceway, October 25-27. "This is the strongest schedule to date for the Speedvision World Challenge," said Mitch Wright, Vice President and General Manager, SCCA Pro Racing. "We're thrilled to be able to feature our brand of racing on natural terrain and street circuits exclusively in 2002. We're fortunate to re-up with several tracks, and look forward to returning to several others after a couple of years away. The addition of the three new venues is a sign of great progress for the Speedvision World Challenge Championships, and North American road racing in general."
