Toronto: Randy Pobst race report

A Street Car Named Desire

Toronto, ON, Canada (July 18, 2010) - Randy and his #6 K-PAX Racing Volvo S60 team took to the streets of Toronto in dominating fashion this weekend, sweeping practice, qualifying and winning the race in round seven of the desirable World Challenge GT championship. Randy broke records, with a new qualifying record of 1:14.583 (84.711mph) and a new race-lap record with a time of 1:15.513 (83.667 mph). Randy led every lap of the 33-lap race but had heavy pressure from James Sofronas' Porsche in the latter half of the race while dealing with lapped traffic. This was Randy's sixth GT pole in seven races. Teammate Andy Pilgrim qualified closely behind in second place and finished on the podium in third place. This was Randy's second win at Toronto but the first win there in the Volvo.

"I am on a post race win high. This is the first race I've won this year that wasn't a doubleheader and I get to enjoy this win for more than one day! What a terrific week. Engineer Will Moody devised a great setup for this street course that worked right out of the trailer. The K-PAX team has really worked hard on the brake issue and the brakes held up well. Sofronas almost got me in a traffic situation with slower cars. When you have different classes of cars, things can get a bit dicey as the faster cars lap the slower cars. Its a matter of timing and one of the breaks in the game. I was feeling the heat towards the end."

"I really need to thank my teammate Andy Pilgrim. He got a better start than I did and had a shot at beating me into the first corner, but he made it easy for me to go into the lead even though he had a good chance at a win. If he hadn't been my teammate, he would have driven me harder. He did it to help my chances and K-PAX's chances at a championship. He is a great guy and a great teammate and I'm so happy to see him finish a race and run so well. We extended our points lead which is a big deal, especially with the 50 lbs of rewards weight we were given after this win. Our 150 lbs extra rewards weight we have received will make it harder to win, and from this point on, we will need reliability to win the championship. Randy has extended both his Drivers' Championship lead (112 point lead) and the Manufacturers' Championship lead for Volvo (14 point lead) with this win. The Acura Sports Car Challenge of Toronto will be televised on July 31 at 3:00 PM on Versus. Randy's next World Challenge race will be a doubleheader at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, August 6-8.
