Speed World Challenge to utilize special Woody's Ice qualifying procedures at Lime Rock.
CENTENNIAL, Colo. (April 10, 2002)-The SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge Championships will introduce new qualifying procedures at this year's Mohegan Sun Presents Lime Rock Park Grand Prix Weekend, May 24-27.
With Speed Touring Car entries expected to reach an all-time high, SCCA Pro Racing has limited the number of starters on the 1.53-mile circuit to 45, introducing a qualifying race in addition to the traditional timed qualifying session to determine the grid.
Saturday's 30-minute timed session will determine the top 25 positions on the grid for Monday's feature race, including the Woody's Ice Pole Position winner. The remainder of the field, in grid order, will run a 20-lap qualifying race, with the top 15 advancing to the final. Five promoters options will fill the final spots on the feature grid, positions 41 through 45.
Not to be outdone, the Speed GT Championship will also hold a unique session Saturday afternoon, following its 30 minute timed session. For the first time in series history, the Speed GT cars will hold single car qualifying with the Woody's Ice Top 10 Shootout. The top 10 qualifiers from the morning session will take to the track individually in reverse order for one warm-up lap and one timed lap. The timed lap will determine their order in the top 10. A driver participating in the Woody's Ice Top 10 Shootout will start the feature no worse than 10th, regardless of their time in the shootout.
"The single car shootout is a concept we've been kicking around for some time, and Lime Rock has been generous enough in their track time allotment to help make it a reality," said Mitch Wright, SCCA Pro Racing Vice President and General Manager. "As for the Touring Car 'last chance' race, too many cars for the track is a good problem from our standpoint, and the most fair way to determine who gets to start is by having people race to get into the field."
"The entire Grand Prix weekend is about providing our fans with the most entertaining racing possible," said Garret Mudd, Lime Rock Park General Manager, "and the new procedures will certainly add a new level of excitement to qualifying for both series and we're thrilled to debut them here at Lime Rock. The intensity of a last chance qualifying race and the pressure of a one lap run for the pole are elements which are not always obvious in the traditional qualifying format, and I think our fans are going to love watching everything play out in these unique sessions."
