A 450 brake horse power Chevrolet stock car sprayed head to toe in army camouflage was today unveiled as the Territorial Army's newest member. Dubbed the 'Stealth Car', it will race against the top UK ASCAR teams in the 2003 series.
The 'Stealth Car' is the result of the TA's title sponsorship of leading ASCAR racing team, Deuce Racing RML. Today, top models joined 20 TA members from all over the UK to unveil the car and test its metal at Rockingham motor speedway.
The TA expects the car's unique camouflage livery to give it the edge whilst it battles it out on the race track, reaching speeds of 180mph on the oval racing circuit. The TA are hoping it will be a case of 'stealth by name, stealth by nature' as the car steals it's way through the line-up to be a regular front runner in the ASCAR series.
The car is just one element of Deuce Racing RML's new 'Team TA' which also includes Formula One Test Driver, Ben Collins - a former Formula 3 and Le Mans driver, cited by Jackie Stewart as one of the most promising drivers around, and leading engineers from constructors Ray Mallock Ltd.
"I am delighted to be selected as the TA driver," says Ben Collins. "It will be a fantastic experience not only to race with Team TA but also to drive the 'Stealth Car'. The car looks amazing -it is definitely going to give me the edge on the track and I feel confidant that Team TA has the potential to be the 2003 ASCAR championship winner."
The 'Stealth Car' is the latest tool in the TA's national recruitment drive. Captain Danny Dugan, TA Royal Logistic Corps explains, "There are many synergies between ASCAR motor racing and the TA. Motor racing is about teamwork, fitness, personal challenge, dedication and excitement, all elements that members find in the TA. It is due to synergies like this, and the vehicle engineering opportunities in the TA that make this sponsorship an ideal fit."
"One of our main recruitment audiences is young men and women aged 17 to 24 years old. We believe the ASCAR sponsorship will help us not only reach this particular target group but also excite and engage them with the TA."
"We plan to communicate with potential recruits at a variety of different levels," Captain Dugan continues, "Firstly, the sponsorship offers us a presence at all ASCAR races in 2003, with crowds of up to 50,000, many of whom fall within our target audience profile. We also plan to take the 'Stealth Car' out and about to our regional units with an extensive roadshow activity. Finally, the sponsorship gives us access to a variety of different media that would otherwise not be open to us."
The second UK ASCAR series kicks off on 11 May 2003 at Rockingham Speedway and the combination of the TA, Deuce Racing, Ben Collins and Ray Mallock Ltd look set to be a winning formula. Ben finished third in only his second ever ASCAR race and is looking forward to a successful challenge for the championship in 2003. Ray Mallock's motor racing pedigree is second to none and the team fielded the first and second place cars in last year's series.
ASCAR racing is currently the fastest growing motor sport in the UK and the 2003 series is set to be as exciting and challenging as last year. Rockingham have raised the stakes both on the track, with a one million dollar prize fund and off the track, with live entertainment planned for race days.
