Goess Jr., Hair and Wood Top Asphalt Nationals

HARRISBURG, N.C. (Oct. 30, 2003) - Craig Goess Jr., Clay Hair and Keven Wood were the big winners as 177 Legends Car racers from across North America converged on Southern National Speedway in Kenly, N.C., Oct. 23-25, for 600 Racing's 12th annual Legends Car Asphalt Nationals.

Goess Jr., a three-time National BFGoodrich Point Champion in the Legends Car Pro category, dominated the event's premier division. The 22-year-old racer from Greenville, N.C., recorded the fastest lap in qualifying and won his heat race to earn the pole-starting position for the Pro division finale.

Goess Jr. jumped to the point at the start of the 30-lap feature, but lost the lead on lap six to Thomas Van Wingerden. However, Van Wingerden's stint at the front of the pack was short-lived as Goess Jr. retook command on lap 10 and went on to record his first victory in the Legends Car Asphalt Nationals.

Van Wingerden held off a hard-charging Mike Hubert for second with Jason Miller and Michael Van Wingerden rounding out the top five.

Wood, the 19-year-old grandson of NASCAR legend Glen Wood, concluded his rookie season of Legends Car racing in spectacular fashion. The Stuart, Va., driver, who had already claimed the National BFGoodrich Point Championship in the Semi-Pro division, scored a clean sweep-setting fast time, winning his heat race and leading all 30 laps of the feature.

C.E. Faulk chased Wood across the stripe in the Semi-Pro finale with Andy Hansen settling for third after challenging the leader during the early laps. Former Bandolero standout Scott Knox charged from the 11th starting spot to take fourth with John Gottsaker fifth.

Hair was clearly the class of the field in the Masters division, which features drivers 40 years of age and older. The 45-year-old Mt. Pleasant, N.C., resident posted the fastest qualifying lap and went wire-to-wire in winning the 30-lap main event.

While Hair, the Master division's 2003 National BFGoodrich Point Champion, was cruising to victory, a fierce battle raged behind him. Jay Young eventually emerged from that battle to claim runner-up honors with Kery Gilbert next under the checkered flag. Rick Rogas and George "Cotton" Spry rounded out the top-five.

Keeping their weekend records perfect, Goess Jr., Wood and Hair also won the Race of Champions in their respective divisions. These races featured only drivers who had captured 2003 state point championships.

Tiffany Daniels of Smithfield, Va., topped the annual Women's Legends race and 40-year-old Dwight Pilgrim of Stockbridge, Ga., claimed the Grand Champion trophy and a $1,000 bonus as the driver scoring the most points in the Legends Car Dirt and Asphalt Nationals.

Built by 600 Racing, a subsidiary of Speedway Motorsports, Inc. (NYSE: TRK), Legends Cars are five-eighths-scale replicas of production coupes and sedans from the 1930s and '40s. Each car features a 73-inch wheelbase; is powered by a sealed 122-horsepower Yamaha motorcycle engine; and competes on street-legal BFGoodrich radial tires.
