Pope Two for Two in Auburndale Action

Auburndale, FL— Von Pope won the Limited Late Model Sportsman 25 lap feature for the second week, taking the points lead. He and Richard Elkins Jr. were tied for the points lead entering Saturday’s racing. Pope started the feature in ninth and took the lead with 5 laps to go. Elkins started 6th and finished second, keeping Pope in sight for the season long points race. Eddie King Sr., struggling lately with car gremlins, started on the pole and finished third. Dave Dunkin finished fourth from a tenth place starting position. Bill Myers, making his first visit to Auburndale this season, started inside the sixth row and came home in fifth. Heat races were won by Pope and Jimmy Castleberry.

The Modified Mini Stock 25 lap feature was won by Shawn Williams starting inside the second row and leading most of the race. Jay Kaminski started 14th and came home second. Jason Rendell was in the lead pack all race and finished third, followed by Kenny Uhl, up from 15th, and Chris Spring. Heat wins went to Kaminski and Don Ezell.

In Street Stock action, 29 cars were on hand, with 28 starting the feature on the quarter mile oval. Ron Lofquist started on the pole and led all 25 laps for the win. Robert Hight started ninth and came home second, followed by Larry Chumney, 18 year old James Wright III, and 17 year old Travis Roland. Heat wins went to Lofquist and Kerry Gibson.

In the Pure Stock V8 feature, the top three in points finished one, two, three; but in reverse order of their points. David Davis, third in points, won from his 11th starting position; Bob Gorsuch, second in points, was second from his 15th starting position; and Donnie Harp, the points leader, started 13th and finished third. Rick Bacon started fifth and came home fourth, while Greg Bacon finished fifth after starting 17th. Heat wins went to Harp and Ron Reed. In the 15 lap feature for Pure Stock 4 Cyl, Randy King started tenth, went all the way to the rear of the field when his hood came loose, and fought his way through the field for the win. He finished ahead of Theresa Craig, Matthew Craig, Gary Green, and David McCaulley. Heats were won by King and Hugh Williams.

The Dwarf Car Racing Association East came into Auburndale with the scaled down replica cars and Dennis Archinal of Auburndale lead the feature wire to wire. He was followed across the finish line by Allen Davis of Ft. Meade, Steve Tregear of Ft. Meade, Donald Hess Jr. of Geneva, and Dan Berry of Longwood. Heat races were won by Hess and Robbie Smith.
