Dwarf Cars Join Regular Divisions for Saturday Night Contest at Auburndale Speedway by Gene Crane Auburndale, FL The Dwarf Car Racing Association paid it’s first visit to Auburndale Speedway Saturday night. Kissimmee driver Floyd Olinger was able to fend off a charge from the back of the pack by Don Hess to win the twenty lap feature. The second place romp by Hess was notable due to an opening lap spin down the backstretch by Hess which left him ¾ of a lap behind the leaders. The Geneva resident was able to chip away at the leader’s advantage trimming the advantage to half a lap before a caution flag allowed him to recover the remaining distance. Dick Lawrence haunted Olinger the entire distance but had to settle for third as Hess was able to move around during the closing circuits. Late Model Sportsman action saw Bud Bronson recover from a grinding crash in the Street Stock feature to win the 25 lap contest. Bronson; who early in the day was troubled by ignition problems; held off a charging Billy Jones who made repeated attempts to pass both high and low. Lee Davis would finish third followed by Eddie Rogers and Late Model rookie Tony Poff. Tim Roark led a spirited dog fight to the checkers to claim the Street Stock win. Ron Lofquist, driving the only Ford in the field, battled with Phillip Sorrell to finish second. Jeff Rodgers who had joined the 5 car lead battle near the halfway point finished fourth 8 car lengths back followed by Chuck Steele. Jay Kaminski and his mini pick-up won the Modified Mini Stock feature over Randy Storer and Gary Brown. The field was forced to endure numerous caution flags for spins during the twenty five lap event. Bobby Judah and Donnie Lockard rounded out the top five. Post-race inspection proved to be the undoing for four of the top seven at the finish of the V8 Pure Stock feature. Surviving the 15 lap grind and inspection was James Wright who was eventually awarded the win. Daniel Clough, last weeks feature winner, was second with Daniel Sasnett, Tommy Dopson and Johnny Vaughn completing the top five finishers. Paul Cockrell, who was fourth in points saw brief action Saturday night as his car took the brunt of the impact in the most serious incident during the 4 Cylinder Pure Stock Feature A. Cockrell’s machine hammered the outside wall along the frontstretch after being sandwiched in a four wide skirmish out of turn four. Paul was unhurt however the damage appeared fairly serious to his 07 racer. Dusty Robinson transformed his last place finish from the week before into a feature win as he led Wayne Weaver, Daryl Habbershaw, Greg Case and Chip Burton to the finish. Haywood Henson stopped by and shared some microphone time early in the evening and NASCAR Goody’s Dash driver George Crenshaw brought the remains of his Dash car out for a final stop before it finds its way to a new home in Las Vegas. Racing action continues this coming Saturday night with regular program. The Pro Figure 8 drivers charge the crossover on March 22nd and a big Easter Egg Hunt awaits the kids on March 29th.
