EL CAJON, CA. Cajon Speedway will take a break from the usual Saturday night fare this holiday week. The 3/8-mile paved oval moves their show to the Fourth of July on Friday night for a holiday special. The tone of the show will be more on fun and less on competition as the track hosts a 150-lap factory stock enduro, an aerial fireworks show, and a boat trailer race.

While the day of the week and cars that are racing will be somewhat different this time around, the starting time and admission prices remain the same. Race time is 6:45 PM. Admission prices are $10 for adults on the east side and $9 on the west side. Kids from 6 --12 are only $3. Children under the age of 6 are free when accompanied by an adult.

The 150-lap factory stock enduro will see the cars lined up three abreast for the start. A coin will be flipped to determine whether they competitors race clockwise or counter-clockwise for the first 75-laps. Then there will be a brief intermission before racing 75-laps in the opposite direction. And though the atmosphere of the evening will be on the less serious side of racing, the racers will be competing for money. A $1000 check awaits the winner of the contest.

About 50 drivers are expected to start the marathon grind where survival rather than speed seems to be more important. "That is the most important thing," John Krempp of El Cajon said recently. "If you don't get around them this lap, that is OK because there is 150-laps to get around them. It's not worth ending up in the wall or in a wreck. Usually what happens is that you come up behind them and start pushing and they overdrive it into the corner and you just drive around them."

Krempp has teamed with Matt Arnold in previous enduros and that pair has been very successful in the event. They finished second a year ago and won the race in 2001. This will mark the first time however that each has driven solo.

With the starting order for the lineup based on the postmark of the date of entry, both Arnold and Krempp are sitting pretty to start. Krempp will start third -- on the outside of the front row in his Crown Victoria while Arnold will be on the inside on the second row.
