Four New Winners and Four Repeaters as Fireworks Fly During Round Three of Hardee's Summer Shootout

CONCORD, N.C. (June 28, 2005) - Fireworks lit up the sky and sparks flew on the race track as Lowe's Motor Speedway's Hardee's Summer Shootout kicked off the Independence Day celebration Tuesday night with a record 236 cars battling during the Amoco Ultimate-sponsored program.

When the fireworks smoke cleared and the final checkered flag waved on round three of the 10-week series, four drivers had secured their first wins and four others were repeat visitors to victory lane.

After failing to crack the top 20 in the first two rounds, Mark Whitley of Charlotte, N.C., posted a wire-to-wire victory in the 20-lap main event for the Centex Homes Legends Car Pro division. Whitley started from the pole and cruised to victory after his most serious challenger, Scott Knox, was knocked out of contention early by mechanical woes.

Tiffany Daniels notched the best finish of her Legends Car Pro division career in second while Michael Van Wingerden moved from ninth on the grid to claim third-place money.

Point leader Thomas Van Wingerden padded his advantage as the Huntersville, N.C., veteran notched his first Duragloss Thunder Roadster feature victory of the season. Van Wingerden emerged from a side-by-side battle for the lead with David Sugg on lap eight and never looked back. Van Wingerden's brother, Michael, claimed runner-up honors while Sugg settled for third in the caution-filled race that was shortened to just 12 laps.

Brennan Poole made the long tow from the Lone Star State pay off with a victory in the 18-lap feature for the Cabarrus Family Medicine Legends Car Semi-Pro division. The Woodlands, Texas, resident captured his first win of the season in a caution-filled event. Casey Dohm started 11th and finished a strong second with Keith Breasbois making an even more impressive run from the 23rd starting spot to third.

John Sossoman extended his point lead in the Verizon Wireless Legends Car Masters division as the New London, N.C., veteran recorded his second consecutive feature victory. Sossoman used the choose rule to his advantage, took command on an early race restart and held off opening week winner Randy Thornton during the closing laps. Defending series champion Clay Hair finished third for the second straight week.

Cole Miktuk stretched his point lead in the Lucas Oil Bandolero Young Guns division, posting his second consecutive victory in the 20-lap feature. Miktuk started 12th, steadily sliced through the field and assumed command with just two laps remaining. Eighth-starting Nick Hoffman charged forward to take second with early leader Matthew Stover settling for third.

Eleven-year-old Darrell Wallace Jr. emerged from a tussle with Gerald White Jr. to win the 20-lap finale for the Lucas Oil Bandolero Bandits. It was the second victory of the season for the Concord, N.C., racer who also won on opening night. White Jr. settled for second while Justin Swilling lined up 12th and passed nine cars en route to a third-place finish.

Randy Spencer of Hillsborough, N.C., inherited the victory in the Lucas Oil Bandolero Outlaws feature after apparent winner Benny Mingo's car was found to be illegal during post-race inspection. The disqualification moved Ryan Salomon up to second with Bruce Benson II third. Eric Redmond, winner of the first two rounds, was a distant fifth at the flag.

Ken Deese of Monroe, N.C., notched his second consecutive victory in the wild-and-crazy CRASHCar feature. Deese's black No. 3 Big Show machine nipped Jeremy Troyano's Area 51 entry at the stripe. Point leader Gene Loden's title hopes took a hit when a multi-car tangle early in the race put his Salvage machine on its roof. No injuries resulted, but Landis, N.C., driver ended up 20th.

Dollar General will host round four of the 10-week Hardee's Summer Shootout Tuesday night, July 5. The action-packed program will include seven divisions of Legends Car, Bandolero and Thunder Roadster racing along with the wild-and-wacky CRASHCars.
