Another rookie championship was secured at Berlin Raceway in 1997. The following year, he raced five shows with ASA posting a best finish of 14th at Berlin Raceway. Ponstein led 16 circuits at the .438- mile oval and made five additional starts in 1999 gaining valuable experience at several different tracks.
