Scott Hantz won last Sunoco visit to Baer Field in 2000.
Salem, Ind. (August 7, 2002) - The last time the Sunoco Super Series invaded Baer Field Speedway in Ft. Wayne, Ind., 2000 Series Champion and Rookie of the Year Scott Hantz collected all the limelight with claiming the checkered flag in the International Truck Gold Cup 100. After a one-year hiatus, the Sunoco Super Series returns to the event in 2002. The 5th Annual International Truck & Engine Gold Cup 100 will be held on Thursday, August 8 at the half-mile oval. This is the first of two visits to Baer Field for the Sunoco Super Series, with the other coming on Sunday, August 25.
In 2000 at Baer Field, Hubler Group/Blake Carburetion Rookie Candidate Scott Hantz continued his record setting freshman season in the series with his victory at the Ft. Wayne, Ind., based track on Thursday, August 10. The pilot of the EMF Corporation / Electric Mills Chevrolet, inherited the lead on the 14th circuit when then leaders Brian Ross and Larry Zent went spinning after driving through fluid. Hantz then held off a determined Glenn Gault and visited the winner's circle for the second occasion in his rookie season.
"It was great to be able to win in front of a lot of my friends tonight," said Scott Hantz, who collected $3,500 for the victory. "All of the brakes seemed to go our way tonight and when I managed to keep the car pointed in the right direction during lap 14 , that was a big help. This makes up for last years' event, which slipped out of our grasp."
Defending series champion Brian Ross grabbed the point at the drop of the green flag and was able to build a sizeable margin over Eddie Van Meter and local favorite Larry Zent. As Ross continued to lead, Van Meter began to feel pressure from the third place runner of Zent and fourth place Hantz, who both were able to complete the pass for position.
The 11th event of the 2000 season went through a wild change of events on the 13th circuit when rookie Shelby Howard suffered mechanical problems that dropped a large quantity of fluid on the fourth corner of the racing surface. When Ross motored through this corner, he then lost control and slid up the banking with Zent also spinning, as third place machine of Hantz was able to tip toe over the slippery racetrack and grab the top position. The sixth place machine of Kenny Tweedy and part-timer Scott Baker were also involved in the accident, both cars were finished for the night with extensive damage. Ross and Zent were forced to restart from the tail of the event.
Through the final 77 circuits, Hantz was able to control much of the event, with second-place finisher Glenn Gault closing several occasions on Hantz's bumper, but could never close enough to attempt a pass for the lead. Bobby Blount finished in third place with David Stremme and Ron Dantzer rounding out the top five.
The 5th Annual International Truck & Engine Gold Cup 100 at Baer Field Speedway begins with a one-hour practice session at 3 PM with Tobacco Depot Qualifying set for 5. The racing program will roll off at 7. For up-to-the-minute coverage, fans can visit the official series website at www.sunocosuperseries.com.
