Defending division champion, Stan Yee Jr (#3) started on the pole and proceeded to lead all 35-laps of the SLM feature. He was challenged periodically throughout the latter portion of the race by Royce Cornett.
"I guess the secret to winning these things is not to do much to the car. The times turned today in this division, I think, are the fastest ever for opening night. Normally it takes several weeks to get down into the 11.40's. Lot of great cars showed up tonight and a win is a great way to start the year off," said Yee Jr.
Moving up from Figure 8 or Street Stocks (he ran both divisions last season), is Greg Studt (#86). Greg is driving for Jack Burdette and is in a car formerly driven by Bill Steinhilber.
Bill Steinhilber (#67) returned to racing after missing the latter portion of last season with hand injuries suffered at a wreck at Flat Rock. He spun during the consolation race and was unable to transfer to the feature.
Regan Ford (#86) won his sixth career Street Stock A division race. It moves him into a tie with Paul Hahn, Von Manning, and Terry Humphrey for 19th overall. "I'm extremely happy. This is a great way to start the season. That's a real tough group of drivers out there. Justin (Schroeder) did a great job out there," said Ford.
Sophmore driver Justin Schroeder #04 did a terrific job, leading the first 17 laps for the A main and coming home in a career best second place. Justin is one of the track's young guns at the track at 17-years of age.
The big wreck of the night happened early when Terry Humphrey (#81) spun in front of the field. Humphrey was through for the night, as was Terry Lilley (#9), Steve Chartrand (#14) and 2003 Rookie of the Year Tod Sturgeon (who broke a hym joint in the accident. Thanks Tod for the info on the car and about the Rookie title!)
Jimmy Rae, who missed most of last season because of an injury sustained at work, returned in winning fashion, with a victory in the Street Stock B division race. It is the second year in a row he won the season opener.
"That was a whole lot of fun out there. Everyone drove as clean as possible .... boy that was a tough race. Actually I wasn't planning on being here opening night, but I'm glad I made it," said Rae.
Third place finisher Don Burkhart's race came to a abrupt end when he spun across the line and slammed hard into the turn one wall at the gate. Defending C division champion Joel Kiger also spun hard into Burkhart's racer. Both drivers were okay.
Things went a little better for Don's brother Jason, who finished second in the C main.
Jim Stocker (that has to be the best name for a street stock driver) won the C main by inches over Jason Burkhart (Don's brother). "Boy that scanner's hard to get off, I'm not used to yet. I've been racing here four years and that's a real great way to start. I honestly don't know how I won, I'm just glad I did," said Stocker.
Jerry Lee Jr won his second career Figure 8 race at Flat Rock.
