St. Amant makes it two in a row with win at Hawkeye Downs.

Cedar Rapids, IA (September 8, 2002) -- Gary St. Amant earned his second victory in six days as an early race penalty for speeding on pit road may have helped his cause leading to the win in the Iowa 300 at Hawkeye Downs Speedway.

After pole-sitter Joey Clanton led for 123 of the first 134 laps, the race leaders pitted. It appeared as though Gary St. Amant's number 7 ACDelco car was the first out of the pits. St. Amant was penalized for exceeding the pit road speed of 30 mph. Forced to come back in to the pits it allowed him the opportunity to get a second pair of fresh tires. It proved to be a long-term advantage on the flat .50-mile oval.

"That early pit stop allowed us to put left side tires on when everybody else didn't," said St. Amant.

Mike Garvey held race leadership on lap 250 when a competition yellow was declared following 100 consecutive laps of green flag racing. All the drivers seemed surprised that each of the leaders decided to pit. Ultimately, Joey Clanton brought his number 83 Camp Fire USA car out of the pits first. It looked like Clanton was headed for a record tying tenth win of the season.

On the restart following a caution at lap 269, St. Amant was able to secure the lead for the first and only time of the day. Clanton, running on the inside, appeared to check up slightly allowing St. Amant to get up underneath him, moving Clanton up the track and making room for the defining pass.

A last lap incident involving Joey Clanton and Kevin Cywinski may have further helped St. Amant's cause in the overall points chase. Cywinski made contact with Clanton's car forcing him into the wall between turns one and two. It resulted in a runner-up finish for Cywinski and a seventh place for Joey Clanton.

"He slipped on the inside, I had the line and we touched," said Cywinski, following his second consecutive runner-up finish.

Joey Clanton's point's lead over Gary St. Amant dwindles to 12 in the overall championship point's standings. Cywinski is third in points trailing Clanton by 72 markers. Rookie David Stremme extends his rookie point's lead to 123 over Dan Fredrickson.

The 2002 ASA Racing Series returns to action on Sunday, September 22 at Illiana Motor Speedway in Schererville (IN) for the Citgo / MDA 300 presented by Texor Petroleum Company. The race will take the green flag just after 1 p.m. (Central) and will be telecast live on TNN The National Network.
