CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (August 4, 2001) -- Rookie sensation Johnny Sauter rewrote another chapter in the ASA history books Saturday night, dominating 300 laps for his seventh win of the 2001 ASA ACDelco Series season in the Texas Roadhouse 300 at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. For Sauter, the win ties him with Scott Hansen for the most victories in a single season since ASA's modern era began in 1992. Veterans Butch Miller and Bob Senneker carry the record for single season victories, with nine.

Sauter's victory also matched the feat Mike Garvey posted in the 2000 season, sweeping both events at Iowa's only paved oval. Sauter and his A.P. Performance Team made only one pit stop, coming at lap 124, and pulled away from veteran Mike Eddy in the race 's final 30 laps.

""We just stuck to our game plan and it paid off here tonight," said Sauter. "Cedar Rapids is the greatest race track and has the greatest fans. We just love coming here. And anyone who says Mike Eddy isn't a great driver has a lot to learn."

Sauter jumped out to the lead from his initial outside front row starting position, but lost the lead on lap 56 to Eddy. Sauter and Eddy swapped the lead several times over the next three laps, with Eddy taking the point until pit stops.

"I don't know what happened to him during those first pit stops, but I was waiting for him to come back up there and give me a run for my money. He is one of my heroes and we put on one hell of a show tonight. It was a great night all over."

Sauter again dominated the race like he did during the Iowa 300 in April, leading 220 of the 300 laps. Sauter led 551 of the 600 laps run in ASA competition at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in 2001.

"He (Sauter) is just the class of the field right now," said Eddy. "We are all out here trying to chase him and his team. I know we are working hard at it and it showed tonight. We are putting a lot of into this team. I am glad to finally be on the podium. Hopefully next race, (at Madison International Speedway) we can be one position better."

Sauter took the lead for the final time on lap 138 from pole sitter Garvey. Veteran Butch Miller was the only other driver to have led laps. Texas Roadhouse driver Kevin Cywinski finished third. Miller and defending ASA National Champion Gary St. Amant rou nded out the top five. Joey Clanton, Robbie Pyle, Tim Taylor, Garvey and Mike Cope rounded out the top 10.

ASA returns to action in two weeks, with the Wisconsin 300 at Madison International Raceway. The August 17 event at the half-mile oval is set to go green at 8 p.m. (Central) and will be telecast LIVE on TNN Sports.
