Clanton claims seventh win at I-70.

Odessa, MO (June 22, 2002) -- Joey Clanton continued to make ASA history, with his seventh victory in the season's first nine events, passing Butch Miller on lap 289 leading to a victory in the Missouri 300 presented by Jani-King and Price Chopper at I-70 S peedway. For Clanton, it marks an eleventh career win in only 49 starts and moves him into the 11th position on the all-time ASA win list.

Pole-sitter Robbie Pyle, for a second consecutive event after starting on the inside front row, was unable to lead the event. Peter Cozzolino grabbed the point through the first 44 laps before surrending to David Stremme. It was the beginning of an event t hat saw seven lead changes among six different drivers with Joey Clanton topping the field on two occasions totaling just 27 laps.

The high banked I-70 Speedway produced its usual assortment of thrills. Wayne Anderson, Chris Wimmer, Joey Clanton and David Stremme swapped the lead during a 50 lap stretch that ended with the race being red-flagged when Russ Tuttle's number 16 Conseco ca r spun and hit the inside wall on the front straight. Debris all over the track forced the red-flag condition and allowed Butch Miller to claim the lead for a first and only time of the evening.

Miller, making only a second start of the season for the three-time ASA National Champion, had pitted once during the race on lap 81. As the event progressed, Miller sustained the advantage over Joey Clanton by controlling the bottom line on the track.

The deciding pass for Clanton over Miller came on lap 289 coming through turn two as the two cars bumped and Clanton was able to pass underneath. He was threatened by David Stremme through the final laps with the Indiana rookie unable to overtake Clanton f or a second straight week and secure his third runner-up finish of the season.

"We struggled a lot today and simply put this was a hard fought victory," said Clanton. "I tried to get underneath Butch (Miller) for a long time and he cut me off. He did his best to hang but we had him when we needed. This is a tough old track and to win here means a lot in our chase for the title."

Clanton extends his margin over Gary St. Amant to 195 markers in the overall championship point's standings. Stremme pulls to within 25 points of Dan Fredrickson in the rookie point's chase.

The 2002 ASA Racing Series moves into it's fifth consecutive event weekend with the Sunday, June 30th Kul Brew 300 presented by Jani-King and Tobacco Outlet Plus at La Cross Fairgounds Speedway in West Salem (WI). The race will take the green flag just aft er 1 p.m. (Central) and will be telecast live on TNN The National Network.
