PENDLETON, Ind. (June 6, 2000) -- Joe Balash has joined the American Speed Association full-time staff in the position of ASA Technical Director. Balash spent the 1999 season serving as an ASA official on the weekends, but is using this opportunity to pursue his love for motorsports.

"The combination of the evolution of this series, with its new engine and tire package, and my skills and training have provided me a unique opportunity," Balash said. "With the things ASA is doing, the use of fuel injection and electronic control systems, this series really fits with my professional training."

Balash, a native of Hobart (IN), attended Lincoln Technical Institute in Indianapolis where he obtained a degree in automotive service management. He then worked for Allen Testproducts where he trained auto technicians on fuel injection systems and electronic systems for eight years. That facility trained 1,500 technicians annually, and Balash created the curriculum for a number of the courses he taught. He went from there to a position with MAC Tools. In addition to his full-time job in 2000, Balash has be en working on a Ferrari 333 SP Sports Racer in the Grand American Series.

"I was a product manager for MAC Tools overseeing four market categories, but my interests have always been in cars. I've always been involved with cars, particularly with the electronics and fuel injection systems," Balash, 37, said. "I've always been interested in the technical aspects of automobiles and engines and ASA is providing me with a great opportunity."

His training at Lincoln Technical Institute, at Allen Testproducts and at MAC Tools has prepared Balash for a challenging new career.

"I was in a position at MAC Tools where I dealt with a lot of people and I've learned to be a straightforward guy," Balash said. "I want people to know what they're going to get from me. I try to be honest with everyone and let them know what to expect. I've always taken that approach and I believe that will help me to adjust to the ASA surroundings."

Balash has been married for three years to Kym and has two children, Samantha and Spencer, from a previous marriage.
