Drawdy's Challenging Speedweeks Ends with Good Points Finish
Team Overcomes Alleged Sabotage to its Super Late Model
FT. PIERCE, FL (February 22, 2005) -- With finishes of third and fourth book-ending his Florida Speedweeks and a sixth-place finish in the point standings, it was obvious that Justin Drawdy had a respectable week in the Super Late Model wars at New Smyrna Speedway.
The stats don't tell the entire story, though. Drawdy and his team had quite a challenge to post the results that they did. They had shock problems, the team parted ways with its crew chief amidst a cloud of controversy and they even missed a night of racing.
On night one of the series, Drawdy got spun early but came back through the field for a podium finish of third. It turned out to be his best finish of the week, but it could have been better if not for the early race melee. Still, Drawdy was satisfied with the night.
"At least we finished," said Drawdy. "We have all our fenders on it and everything is ready to go for tomorrow night. That was my goal going into it."
A few nights later, Drawdy found that his car's handling was extremely evil. The problem was found as soon as he pulled into the pits.
"We broke a right-front shock," said Drawdy. "We lost tire stagger in the front. We came in, took a look at it and ended up breaking a shock in the process."
The problem was that his team had some adapting to do. Drawdy lost his crew chief after the Tuesday night races and the team had to overcome that obstacle.
"My crew chief heard what former racers turned crew chiefs were getting paid during Speedweeks and apparently he wanted more money," explained Drawdy. "He came up to my father and said that if we wanted to sit on the pole and be like how we used to be, we needed to pay him. He said he's been messing with our car all week. It is a bad deal. It shocked me. I never had any problems with him before this."
So the Drawdy Construction team took Wednesday off to regroup and prepare for the final three nights of racing. Drawdy came back to finish seventh on Thursday and improved to a fourth-place finish on Friday night.
"We had a good racecar," said Drawdy. "We struggled quite a bit on Thursday night. It was not good enough to win. But we made some head-way."
Saturday night brought the final night of racing and another fourth-place finish.
"All in all, it is not what we wanted, but under the circumstances, we battled the adversity and came out with some decent finishes. We missed a night of racing and still finished ahead of some guys who competed in every race. This is a strong team and we will move onward and upward through the rest of the season."
