St. Amant Takes Pole For Sunday's
ASA WJ Plemons 200 At USA International Speedway
Lakeland, FL (March 23, 2002) - Gary St. Amant of Columbus, Ohio, won the pole on Saturday for the Sunday, March 24th WJ Plemons Investments 200 presented by Jani-King at the .75-mile USA International Speedway. His #7 ACDelco car was the fourth last car t o make a qualifying attempt and posted a 21.615 seconds lap / 124.913 mph.
It becomes the 24th pole for St. Amant in his ASA career. He won at Lakeland in the historic 2000 season opener, an event which saw the debut of the fuel-injected 5700 engine and the BFGoodrich Traction T/A radial tires.
Rookie Kyle Busch of Nevada, making his ASA debut, will start alongside St. Amant on the front row. Third-year veteran Joey Clanton of Georgia will start third with Pat Kelly of Illinois and rookie Dan Fredrickson of Minnesota rounding out the top-five.
"Cloud cover at the time was worth at least a tenth of a second and maybe more," said St. Amant of his qualifying run. "I tested here a few weeks back and didn't run all that well. I didn't have a single pole last year and that was hard to swallow. My wors t nightmare would have been for the youngster (Kyle Busch) to win the pole at his first ASA race."
The 16 year old Busch, driving for Roush Racing, posted a 21.615 seconds lap and held the provisional pole until St. Amant took over. "My first lap was pretty slow, but we picked up four-tenths in the second lap," said Busch. "This is a blast. The guys wer e yanking my leg about winning the pole, but I didn't really think it would hold up. This is way past our dreams for qualifying."
Wayne Anderson of Wildwood was the highest home state Florida qualifiers. The ASA rookie will start ninth. Mike Cope of Pinellas Park, Travis Kittleson of Merritt Island, Jeff Emery of Longwood and Ed Brown of Leesburg comprise the Sunshine State starters set to battle for the $192,810 purse.
The WJ Plemons Investments 200 presented by Jani-King is the first of the 20 event 2002 ASA Racing Series season. Gates open at 11 a.m. Sunday morning, with the on-track fan autograph session featuring the Martial Law Band set to begin at noon. The green flag will fly at 2:00 p.m. (Eastern). The event is to be telecast live on TNN (The National Network) beginning at 2 p.m.
