Winner Garvey's engine to be tested at LASAR.

Pendleton, IN (April 28, 2003) -- In its continuing effort to ensure a level playing field for all teams, American Speed Association officials shipped ASA Racing Georgia 250 Presented by Jani-King winner Mike Garvey's race engine to LASAR Technology for a thorough inspection.

The engine from Garvey's race-winning car left Georgia in ASA's possession, and after the post-race check, the engine will remain at LASAR's shops until a planned freshening is completed.

It is not the first time ASA has taken this step: in each of the last two seasons, engines have been sent to LASAR following race victories by Johnny Sauter and Joey Clanton, respectively.

Garvey, for his part, expressed support for the process. "That's fine," he said. "I have no problem with that whatsoever. I'm behind ASA 100 percent. I love what they're doing, and I like how they're checking everything. I've been talking with [ASA owner] Steve Dale and also to [ASA Technical Director] Kim Shaver, and I think it's great."

One of the first items of business for Dale when he took over as ASA owner was to strengthen the technical inspection process. The series has invested a great deal of time and energy in beefing up its inspection procedures to ensure all drivers are racing on the same basis.

Garvey is a big fan of a level playing field, and that's what the engine check process guarantees. "As a racer, all I want to know is that I have an equal shot," he said. "To the people who aren't in the series yet, but are watching to see how things are going, this speaks volumes. This is one issue you'll always have; are we sure we're getting the same treatment as everybody else? In a lot of other series, it's pretty well known that doesn't happen. If I'm going to spend the money to invest in the series, will I have an equal shot at it? I think this is good for the series and I know they're going to maintain it. When you know where you stand, then that's OK. If we treat everyone the same, that's all we can ask for. I think they're doing a great job of doing that."

Garvey, who powered past Robbie Pyle with five laps remaining at Lanier and held off a determined Scott Lagasse Jr. for his first victory since March 2001, said the engine in his car "had something like 50 races on it" and that he had radioed team owner Bill Plemons during the race that the engine was down on horsepower. "We were going to take this one out anyway," Garvey said. "That's the only reason Bill let me do the donuts after we won!"
