This Saturday night, July 28, Western Canada's top Late Model teams will be at Bridge City Speedway for the third round in the five-race ACDELCO Late Model Tour - the SUTHERLAND AUTOMOTIVE 150 'Summer Sizzler'.

Featuring the fastest Late Model stock cars in the region, similar to the machines raced in NASCAR's Weekly Racing Series in the U.S., the Western Racing League is now in its fifth year of operation. Renamed the ACDELCO Late Model Tour following the decision of the well-respected ACDELCO brand to become involved with the WRL, the series is the highest level of oval track racing in Western Canada.

Drivers calling Bridge City Speedway home have won the championship in every year the Tour has been in operation. Saskatoon native Charlie Kirton was the first racer to earn the title of champion in 1997. Trent Seidel, also of Saskatoon, was the winner in 1998, 1999 and 2000 and leads the points again this year.

The reign of these Saskatoon racers has not been without stiff opposition from other city racers and teams outside the city and even the province. 'Gentleman' Jim Gaunt owns nine local Late Model titles and has also won the last three Tour races run at Bridge City Speedway. Earl Harms of Prince Albert is a threat to win every time his orange #53 takes to the track.

Calgary-based racers Barry Bischoff and Bill Royce have been the leading lights of a strong group of southern Alberta teams which have fought against the dominance of the Saskatchewan teams, with Bischoff scoring the only Tour victory to date by an Alberta driver - in Regina in 1998. The Alberta capital is well- represented, too, with Trevor Emond and Ross Genovy the top Tour participants from the Edmonton area.

This weekend's SUTHERLAND AUTOMOTIVE 150 'Summer Sizzler' marks the mid-point of the 2001 season. The touring teams who are in the running for the championship know that the Saskatoon stop is critical to their title hopes. The many local teams who will be in the field on Saturday night will be giving nothing away, trying to make a strong showing in front of their hometown crowd.
