Barton and Close Renew Rivalry at Little Valley
Dick Barton, from Ashville, New York, known as "King Richard" in the dirt late model circuit he runs, will continue one of the areas most intense rivalries at Little Valley Speedway on Saturday, August 24th, when he takes on Bob Close from Eldred, Pennsylvania, who has a legion of fans of his own, in the $3000 Super Late Model Feature.
Barton, the popular driver, known for his numerous victories and flashy driving style, and Close, who also has plenty of wins in his career, recently edged Barton by one point in the six race Tri State Super Late Model Championship held at Raceway 7, McKean, and Little Valley. Barton returned the favor on August 10th when he beat Close by a mere two points for the McKean County late model title.
The two veterans have raced each other for many years and the competition has always been intense, with the two staging some classic duels with razor thin finishes. Through it all, both men have tremendous respect for each other. Indeed, on the night Barton won the title at McKean he paid the ultimate tribute to Close, saying, "Bob Close is a heckuva guy, and he's been awful fast. Don't sell Bob Close short anywhere."
As they prepare for the fourth of the six scheduled late model races at Little Valley, Close leads Barton by a scant two points, in spite of the fact that Barton won the last race, which saw him fall that one point short in the Tri State, as Close finished third. They won't be racing alone, however, as Ron Davies from Warren, PA, who scored an exciting win over Close earlier in the year at LVS, and Todd Andrews, like Close, from Eldred, PA, are close by, tied for third.
Also on the program that night are the Super Stocks led by point leader "Billy the Kid" Holmes from Chaffee, running for $1000 to win and a guaranteed spot in the Ransomville "King of the Hill," the Street Stocks, led by Wayne Mohawk from Irving, who holds a narrow lead over defending champing, Jim Kennerknecht from Erie, vying for a $500 winner's check, and the school buses.
