Memphis qualifying report

Joey Clanton takes pole at Memphis.

Millington, TN (August 24, 2002) - Veteran Joey Clanton won his third pole of 2002 and the fifth of his ASA career with a fast time of 22.974 secs. / 117.499 mph. It gives him the top starting position for Sunday's Jani-King 200 presented by Flash Market. The qualifying effort comes on the heels of Clanton's eighth win of the season in ASA's most recent event at Toledo Speedway on August 11.

"I had a lot of confidence in the car today but were a little of on our mock run," said Clanton, following qualifying. "We thought we had a couple of tenths of time left in the car and our second lap should have been quicker but there was a little slip in three.

Butch Miller of Michigan will alongside Clanton on Sunday as his time of 22.986 secs. / 117.462 mph was the only other qualifying time posted under 23 seconds flat.

Third-Place qualifier Robbie Pyle of Columbus was mildly pleased with his effort. " We tested here two weeks ago and backed it up with good practice times," said Pyle. "I know we'll have a good car for the race."

Gary St. Amant of Columbus and Kevin Cywinski of Wausau (WI) rounded out the top-five qualifiers.

Race day activities find the spectator gates opening at 11 a.m. with the on-track fan autograph session featuring Memphis singing sensation Bryan Hayes starting at noon. The Jani-King 200 presented by Flash Market will take the green flag at 2 p.m. (Centra l).
