ASA Midwest Tour Travels To Iowa For Prestigious Miller 100
DAYTONA BEACH, FL (May 27, 2007) -- The American Speed Association Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by Echo Outdoor Power Equipment will be heading to Iowa to race at the Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids Friday June 1 in the running of the Keith Fleck Miller 100.
"It evolved over the years to the point where if you look at the past winners, it's a who's who of Midwest short track racing, both asphalt and dirt. The ASA Midwest Tour brings the competition level back to a place where we can count on the best Midwest pavement racers being here as in past years when ARTGO was involved. Familiar names like former winners Steve Carlson and Charlie Menard, as well as ASA National Champion Kevin Cywinski lend much credibility to the competition level we will see. If you add Nate Haseleu being one of the hottest drivers going right now, I just don't know how there could be a race anywhere in the Midwest or for that matter, the entire country, where the you have this level of competition," said Dudley Fleck of Fleck Sales, "I'm extremely excited from the standpoint that this is the first chance in several years to attract a good crowd and make money for our charity, The Boys and Girls Clubs of Cedar Rapids. Super Late Model racing does this through making this race accessible to the Midwest's best drivers - not just crate engine racers, or built engine racers, or veteran champions, or the new young guns. The Tour offers the ability to attract all of them."
"I have raced at Hawkeye Downs before and it's a really nice facility. It's a wide track with good passing. The fast cars will make it up to the front," said Donny Reuvers, who sits second in ASAMT point standings.
The Hawkeye Downs Speedway is one of only two paved ovals in Iowa and has been in operation since 1925. The facility includes the half-mile and also a quarter-mile track, paved pit area, an enclosed tech building and inspection area, quality lighting, electronic message board, full concession facilities, as well as a new scoreboard and transponder timing and scoring system added in 2003. The race will be broadcast on KCRG-AM
The race for charity will feature the ASA Midwest Tour running 100 laps as well as events in the USAC Ford Focus Midgets and Miller Time Modifieds.
"This race is very special to the whole Fleck family and it's also a special treat to the Hawkeye Downs race fans. It's been a few years since they have seen hardcore high horsepower Super Late Model racing and everyone is excited to see the biggest names in short track racing. The American Speed Association Midwest Tour is getting the job done by putting people in the stands, and I contribute that success to the quality of our competitors and the fact that the fans want to see a great race with true Super Late Models as the headliner," stated ASAMT VP Steve Einhaus, "Most of all, it is a pleasure to be able to work with Dudley Fleck on this event and to help raise money for charity."
Among those expected to enter include Kevin Cywinski (Lakeville, MN), Charlie Menard (Eau Claire, WI), Dan Fredrickson (Elko, MN), Josh Vadnais (White Bear Lake, MN), Donny Reuvers (Dundas, MN), Adam Royle (Farmington, MN), Bryan Roach (Minneapolis, MN), Kenny Richards (Montello, WI), Nathan Haseleu (Marshall, WI), Steve Carlson (West Salem, WI), Rod Wheeler (Appleton, WI), Brad "JJ" Mueller (Random Lake, WI), Dave Feiler (Sun Prairie, WI), Travis Sauter (Necedah, WI), Collin Bamke (Slinger, WI), Kris Kelly (Norway, MI), and Jamie Iverson (Escanaba, MI).
Richards leads the standings for the first time this season leading into the event. The race winner will take home as much as $3,400. The first two events of the season drew 51 and 40 cars, respectively, and only 26 fill the starting grid for the main event.
In its 35-year history, over $262,000 has been donated as a result of the Miller 100. Past winners include names like Joe Shear ('91 and '95), Steve Carlson ('96, '97, '99, '01), Justin Diercks ('02, '03), and Stephen Leicht ('05).
This year the designated charity for the Miller 100 is the Boys/Girls Club of Cedar Rapids.
Advance tickets for the Miller 100 are on sale at the Hawkeye Downs business office from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday or at Fleck Sales during regular business hours.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children 5 to 12.
The rain date is Saturday June 2 at 2 p.m.
