O'Reilly/NCRA Late Models Roar Back into Action with Four Races this Weekend
TOPEKA, Kan. (June 27, 2005) -- After a light early season schedule that saw one event cancelled and another rained out, the O'Reilly/NCRA Late Model Series presented by Hoosier Racing Tires has been idle since June 5. But that all changes this weekend when they celebrate the Fourth of July with a bang -- four events on four different days at four different tracks in three different states!
Friday they return to the Cornhusker State for an appearance at I-80 Speedway, located at Nebraska Raceway Park in Greenwood, Neb., after being rained out on May 29. The NCRA late models only appearance here last year was at the Alphabet Soup race, won by Iowa's John Hampel.
Saturday they travel about 90 minutes west and south to Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Neb., for the first of three scheduled shows this year. Al Purkey won two of their three shows at JMS last year, with Kelly Boen picking up the other checker.
Sunday finds them headed south to the famed High Banks at Belleville, Kan., where they annually stop over the Fourth of July and Labor Day holiday weekends. Purkey dominated at Belleville last year, winning both events.
The O'Reilly/NCRA Late Models will conclude their weekend odyssey on Firecracker Day at State Fair Speedway in Oklahoma City.
Winless through the first four races this year -- after six victories in 2004, with four of them coming at tracks the series visits this weekend - Purkey took over the points lead with a runner-up finish June 5 at 81 Speedway. Three top fives and four top 10s have helped push him to the top.
Aiding Purkey's ascension was Boen's absence from the last race. Up to that time Boen had led in points after garnering a pair of wins in the first three races, but now sits in seventh, 190 points out of the top spot.
Rookie Johnny Bone Jr. is currently second in points, just 50 markers behind Purkey.
Only 50 points behind Bone is the veteran Steve Kosiski, who holds a slim 10-point margin over Mike Conkwright and Delbert Smith, tied for fourth.
Boen opened the season May 27 with a dominating win at Mid-Nebraska Speedway in Doniphan, Neb. The following weekend he picked up his second win of the season and the 11th of his NCRA career on June 4 in Dodge City, Kan.
Smith won their last time out as he visited victory lane for the 10th time in his NCRA career June 5 at 81 Speedway.
Sandwiched in between the wins by Boen and Smith is one by Brett LaFollette, who captured the checker at Dodge City on June 3. It was his first career NCRA late model series win.
