WEST PLAINS, Mo. (Saturday) Heavy rain showers Saturday evening forced postponement of the Show-Me 100 at West Plains Motor Speedway. The $31,000-to-win race, the biggest unsanctioned dirt late model race in the country, will be run Sunday afternoon with front-row starters Rick Aukland and Scott Bloomquist leading the 24-car field.

Gates will open at 9 a.m. Sunday with hot laps scheduled for 11 a.m. Racing begins at 11:45 a.m. While 18 cars clinched starting spots in the Show-Me 100 during Friday night's heat races, winners of six consolations Sunday will be added to complete the starting field.

Sporadic rain Saturday in southcentral Missouri ended for a couple of hours in the late afternoon, but light showers resumed before 7 p.m., and became heavier throughout the next hour. Track officials decided to postpone the race about 8:30 p.m.

The Sunday afternoon weather forecast appears to be more favorable although rain is possible in the latter part of the day. ------------------------------------------------------------- SHOW-ME 100 STARTING LINEUP

WALLACE QUICK TIME CAME LATE ....: Wendell Wallace set fast time Friday night, but it was *when* he did it that was most impressive. Despite qualifying 97th of 107 cars on a surface that got significantly slower throughout time trials, he zipped to a lap in 15.151 seconds. "I thought we was going to be in for a long time, drawing that late a (qualifying time), but it seems like everything's worked out all right," said Wallace. "I knew if we could've went out early we had a good shot at the pole, but going out that late, I didn't know if we had a legitimate shot at it. But when I drove into the first corner it felt real good, and we hit the tire combination right on the head." Wallace won $900 from GRT Race Cars for his fast qualifying time.

.... KNOCKING ERB BACK TO SECOND: Surprising Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill., driving a new C.J. Rayburn chassis, ended up with second fast time after Wallace's quick lap. "I was hoping to qualify well, but I didn't know I could do that well," said Erb, a regular at Kankakee and LaSalle speedways. "I was really hoping that (the time) would stand ... I was back here mounting tires and I heard the crowd scream and I knew something was up."

AUKLAND TAKES ADVANTAGE OF INVERSION: The inversion of the heat winners put Rick Aukland on the pole for the feature, but it didn't change his mind about starting races with the slower qualifiers up front. "I'm really not in favor of it," Aukland said, "but it worked out for us this time."

BLOOMQUIST DEBUTS RAYBURN CHASSIS: Scott Bloomquist, who split with car builder Barry Wright last month, debuted a C.J. Rayburn-built car Friday at West Plains. Bloomquist's unsponsored car was black and white and carried the circular yin-yang symbol, just as his car did last week at West Virginia Motor Speedway. "I'm really glad to get Scott," said Rayburn, who will start in the third row in Sunday's feature. "I hope we can keep him. If we can keep him satisfied. He seems to be happy with the car. But he's going to be a plus for us."

A FRIENDLY REMINDER: In case Steven Morgan of Orangeville, Ill., failed to relax while driving, he had a helpful suggestion written on the center padding of his steering wheel: "BREATHE!"

DRIVERS AND CARS: Tony Cardin drove Donnie Barnhart's backup car .... Howard Willis was driving Michael Coleman's backup car .... Steve Russell was in a brand-new Larry Shaw chassis after driving a Rayburn early in the year .... Robbie Starnes also had a new Larry Shaw chassis .... Bob Pierce's new Stephen McCullough-owned car had a red and white paint job .... modified driver Mark Noble of Blooming Prairie, Minn., drove the Billy Moyer-owned No. 21, carrying the traditional red and yellow paint scheme.

OTHER ODDS AND ENDS: Dale McDowell, Rex Richey, Clint Smith, Terry Muskrat, Mark Barber and Kevin Weaver will start on the pole positions in Sunday's consolations .... Brian Birkhofer, an Iowa driver who runs the NASCAR Busch All-Star Tour, was driving on Hoosier tires for the first time .... Shane Harris drove a Mopar-powered car .... Kevin Weaver's hauler and car now sports the address for his web site <www.kevinweaver.com> .... among drivers getting their cars banged up in Friday's heat races were Johnny Virden, Gar Dickson, Don O'Neal, Randy Floyd and Jack Simmons. ------------------------------------------------------------- CREDIT: Todd Turner <DirtNews@aol.com> of DirtNews Digest. -------------------------------------------------------------
