Elbin Wins First at Path Valley

Spring Run, PA_ Bob Elbin outraced Everett neighbor Todd Price for his first win ever in six-cylinder strictly stocks Saturday night at the Path Valley Speedway Park.

"I've been trying for three years now, since you started racing these cars regularly, and I couldn't be happier," Elbin said after leading every lap in his B&R Garage racer.

"The crumpled sheet metal shows that I've tried, and starting in front finally really helped," he said after scoring two heat wins and a second place finish in previous seasons that left his blue #48 looking like a real "junkyard car."

The V-8 win went to Jerry Fleming of St. Thomas, a frequent victory lane visitor, and Mark Campbell of Blair's Mills won his second feature in the four-cylinders while Robbie Kendall, 13, of Baltimore, continued to dominate the Cyclones.

The low budget Strictly Stock class, formerly called junkyard or guardrail cars, race every other Saturday night at Path Valley with gates open at 5:00 and warm-ups at 6:30.

Elbin, who once won a heat race and drew an inversion pill to start tenth, started on the pole this time and led past winner Todd Price by as little as six feet until lap nine when he started putting slower cars a lap down. The only restart of the night came on lap 16 when Josh Walstrum rolled #78 onto its roof on the front stretch, and Elbin held control on the restart to take the win by two lengths as Price and Andy Krause battled for second. The front five were Elbin, Price, Krause, Robert Weist and Dave Leidy.

Barron Taylor led all but the final yards of the four-cylinder feature. The #91 that had battled with Campbell for second from lap seven on came out of turn four with a swipe to Campbell and then went up the turn to take out Taylor and finish first but disqualified. The win went to Campbell with Taylor second and Johnny Runk, Jeff Koser and Wayne Kopp filling out the front five.

Kendall, who has won every Cyclone race, waited until lap seven to take the lead from Carlos Morgan with Jimmy Staton third.

Jerry Fleming and Dan Gelwicks finished the first lap side by side in the V-8 feature, but then Fleming edged ahead and into lapped traffic on lap six. Gelwicks and Derrick Hinish briefly battled for second and then Tom Brady took over the runner-up spot with three to go. The front five at the finish were Fleming, Brady, Gelwicks, Joe Daywalt and P.L. Best.

The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike. The new phone number at the track is 717-349-7111.
