BURLINGTON, Iowa (Monday and Wednesday) Jay Johnson fought off a challenge from Gary Webb late in the race to win the Pepsi USA Late Model Nationals at 34 Raceway to win $10,000, the West Burlington driver's biggest career payday.

Webb snagged the lead from Johnson on the 77th lap, but Johnson answered three laps later by working around Webb in lapped traffic and hanging to win the race, which was postponed until Wednesday after Tuesday's inclement weather.

Webb settled for second place in front of 17th-starting Mark Burgtorf, Jeff Aikey and track owner Johnny Johnson (Jay's father), who went to the tail after a lap-24 spin but rallied to finish fifth. Thad Trump, Ted Pallister, Curt Martin, Tom Darbyshire and Harry Walker finished sixth through 10th on the 3/8-mile oval in southeastern Iowa.

Outside polesitter Gary Russell led the first five laps, but Johnson moved his No. 5 into the lead after that and led more than 70 laps. Webb finally caught Johnson to briefly take the lead, but Johnson regained the top spot with a move on the high side when Webb was briefly slowed trying to lap Russell on lap 80.

"We could have raced all night and I don't think I could have caught Jay again," Webb said. Said Jay Johnson: "It was a tough race. I had no idea where Gary was until he passed me."

NOTES: It was the first year that drivers were required to race with the IMCA spec engine .... next year's purse will get a $1,000 boost, track officials announced .... there's also consideration of moving the race from its traditional Monday-Tuesday schedule to a weekend .... the IMCA Deery Brothers Summer Series travels to Burlington on Sept. 12-13 .... hobby stocks ran with the late models Monday, while modifieds ran with them Wednesday .... the combination of postponements and rainouts allowed drivers who also race with the NASCAR Busch All-Star tour not to miss any midweek races (see stories below).

DOMINACKI GETS FIRST NASCAR BUSCH ALL-STAR TOUR VICTORY: Starting outside the front row, Bob Dominacki immediately grabbed the lead from polesitter Steve Kosiski and led all 50 laps at East Moline (Ill.) Speedway for his first career NASCAR Busch All-Star Tour victory. Ray Guss, who took second place from Kosiski on the eighth lap, challenged Dominacki side-by-side throughout much of the event before settling for the runner-up spot. Said the winner: "The car was a little tight in the beginning. I just had to keep throwing it in (to the corner) to get it to turn. I just kept throwing it harder. I knew they were back there." NASCAR EVENT RAINED OUT AT PEORIA: The NASCAR Busch All-Star Tour-sanctioned Jon Hamilton Memorial 50 at Peoria (Ill.) Speedway was postponed because of wet grounds. No makeup date has been set.
