Mitchum Finds Victory at BeaveRun - Morgan Clinches Title

Chris Mitchum, last year's inaugural Stock Car Championship Series champion, finally found victory on Oct. 25, the last day of the 2003 season, by winning the first of two 30-lap races on the beautiful 1.53-mile, 12-turn BeaveRun Motorsports Complex in Wampum, Pa.

Starting third on the grid behind J.P. Morgan, and Kenny Liesfeld, Mitchum initially inherited the lead halfway through the event when J.P. Morgan's 15-second lead vanished due to a broken panhard bar bracket.

"I worked on Kenny for the first couple of laps and was able to get him in a corner," said Mitchum, who grabbed second early in the race when Liesfeld made an uncharacteristic mistake and ran off course. "But we had a couple of position changes."

Liesfeld led lap 17, but found himself in a battle for second by the end of the race. John Martin, who started fourth on the grid, pressured Liesfeld at the end of the event and grabbed the runner-up spot.

"It was great getting back into the car this weekend," said Martin. "We had some very close racing through the last portion of the event."

Morgan clinched the SCCS 2003 title when his closest competition in the points, John Goodson, dropped out due to mechanical problems one lap after Morgan's own demise from the event.

"I would have liked to have won the championship and the race, but I can't complain," said Morgan, who went undefeated in SCCS competition in 2003 before pulling into BeaveRun. "It feels great. This is my first championship of any type - it's indescribable. It makes me feel proud."

There were three lead changes among three drivers. Morgan ran the fastest lap of the race at 59.590, or 92.432 mph. He qualified at 59.308. The event was slowed by two cautions for eight laps.
