GAINESVILLE, GA -- Wisconsin's Scott Wimmer dominated the final 100 laps of the Discount Auto Parts 300 at Lanier National Speedway to record his first career ASA win in only his second start on the ACDelco Series tour.

Wimmer in the Sierra Racing Products Chevrolet failed to make the season opening event in Florida when a bolt went through his radiator while he was leading the qualifying race at USA International Speedway.

But at Lanier National Speedway on Friday, Wimmer started 12th in the 34-car field and moved into the top ten at the start. At the 100 lap mark Wimmer made his only pit stop of the night, it was the only time he would need to stop for BFGoodrich tires.

At the 154-lap mark Wimmer was running third behind veterans Tim Sauter and Mike Miller. With 121 circuits remaining, Miller and Sauter were battling for the top spot when the Wisconsin rookie of the year contender moved to the outside and was able to powe r around both of them.

>From there he steadily increased his lead first over Sauter, who crashed on lap 258 and then Miller and Butch Miller.

His run to the checkers was only halted for a short time when the last of 17 caution flags waved on lap 194 when Greg Stewart spun on the back straight. On the restart Wimmer opened up a lead over Mike Miller to take the checkers by .988 seconds.

"This is unbelievable," said Wimmer following the win. "I've followed ASA racing all my life and dreamed about this, this is a dream come true."

While in victory lane Wimmer said he owes the success he has achieved in his racing career to former driver Joe Shear and his late uncle Larry Detjens.

"I was worried about that last yellow," he said. "But the car got better and better all night. We were going to pit twice, but found we didn't need to."

Wimmer was caught up in an incident on lap 95 when he made contact with Mike Miller entering turn one.

"That was my bonehead mistake of the night," he said. "I drove in too hard. I didn't mean to bump Mike but at least we didn't damage either car."

Miller said that he didn't have enough car to challenge Wimmer for the win.

"He had us beat," said Miller in the Jani-King Pontiac. "I'm tickled to death for him. I raced against his uncle many times and I'll tell you Larry is looking down and smiling."

Miller said before the Discount Auto Parts 300 the teams were guessing on how the unseasonably cool temperatures would effect the tires on the .375-mile oval.

"One theory was that it was so cold the car would be tight or so cold that the cars would run loose," said Miller. "It turned out the cars were tight and it was so cold the tires wouldn't get a grip."

Butch Miller in the Meijer Pontiac, making his return to ASA after winning the 1994 championship, said it was excellent to be back on the podium in ASA.

"This is the best finish I've had anywhere in a couple of years," said Miller. "The car was bent up a little at the end. I got caught in a couple of wrecks and missed a couple of wrecks. This was fun."

Pole sitter Ricky Johnson in the Nationwide Auction Systems Chevrolet led the first 33 laps when he was passed by Mike Eddy in the Eweb21.com Chevrolet with an inside move on the back straight.

Johnson's chance of winning his first ASA race ended on lap 131 when he was collected in an incident in turn one with Greg Usher and Larry Foyt. Johnson spent many laps in the pits while the crew made repairs.

Eddy remained in the lead until he pitted on lap 158 which gave the lead to Tim Sauter in the Build-A-Mold Chevrolet. Shortly after the restart Eddy got caught up in a three car incident in turn one and hit the outside retaining wall, knocking a hole in th e radiator.

Sauter led until Wimmer made the winning pass on lap 179 to collect $16,450 of the $198,700 purse. Joining Wimmer, Mike Miller and Butch Miller on the lead lap were Kevin Cywinski, Scott Hansen, Gary St. Amant and Jack Landis.

The ACDelco Challenge Series travels to Hickory Motor Speedway on April 22 for the running of the North Carolina 300 presented by Jani-King. The race will be televised on TNN Sports starting at 1 p.m. (Eastern).
