$10,000 Showdown at Sundown to hit Adelaide February 28!

FEBRUARY 2, 2004 - Adelaide's Cathedral of Speed, Speedway City is preparing itself for the inaugural $10,000 'Showdown at Sundown' on Saturday February 28 for Late Model Sedans, the first time this International class of racing has been held in Adelaide.

Late Model Sedans, with their sleek and aggressive look, are rapidly gaining popularity throughout the country and the Showdown at Sundown represents the beginning of what the Late Model Racing Association East Coast perceives to be a long relationship with the City of Churches.

"The Speedway City promotion have expressed a desire to establish Late Model Racing in Adelaide and the Showdown at Sundown is the first of, I am sure, many more major events over the next few years," said Managing Director of the Late Model Racing Association East Coast, Bruce Mackenzie. "Late Models are the only Sedan division in Australian Speedway racing that run to exactly the same rules as their American counterparts and are one of only two to three classes in the whole sport here that run to a full International Specification."

"This means that you could take the car you race in Adelaide on Saturday night, put it on a plane and race it in America the next weekend."

"In America, major Late Model events draw upwards of 200 cars to compete in the one event, one cannot comprehend how big it is there," observed Mackenzie. "NASCAR racing is seen as a natural progression from Late Models, with several NASCAR drivers owning teams."

"It's hard to believe, but the popularity of Late Models in the States has, really, yet to peak. The World of Outlaws, who operate the biggest Sprintcar Series in the World have just announced a 40 round Late Model Series in America, which the Late Model fraternity in Australia are keeping a very close eye on."

The Showdown at Sundown will bring together competitors from New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia. "WA sets the pace in Late Model promotion for Australia," added Mackenzie. "We are in negotiations to entice several of their competitors to Adelaide for the Showdown at Sundown and potentially a top American for the opportunity to race for the $10,000 purse. The field we have already is very strong and includes several of the nation's top drivers."

Speedway City promoter, Wendy Turner wants Adelaide to be a leader in Late Model Racing in Australia. "Late Model racing is huge throughout the Speedway world. Traditionally, Australian Speedway has this strange habit of not following world trends. With these cars replicating their US counterparts, I can see a window of opportunity for Adelaide to be a hub of Late Model Racing in Australia. The Showdown at Sundown is only one of the major events we have in the pipeline for Late Model Sedans."
