Morgan's Successful Season Finds Him in the Championship Hunt
Ether, N.C. (September 2, 2009) -- J.P. Morgan has been a familiar face in the USAR Pro Cup Series garage since 2002, but 2009 has been the year where he is really starting to make a name for himself. The season has been a success so far with four top-five finishes, including a second at Winchester [In.] Speedway back in June. Now the Series friendliest competitor finds himself knocking on the door of his first Pro Cup win and even a shot at the 2009 Championship.
"This has been an outstanding season for us as a team. Our cars have been much faster and we've made improvements by leaps and bounds, more so than in previous years and it's shown," said Morgan, who is not only the driver, but the owner of J&R Racing and his Phil Morgan Pottery Chevy Impala. "Going into the season, one of our goals was to get a top five finish. Another goal was to go to the track with a car that was capable of winning each weekend, both of which I feel we have achieved."
This weekend marks the beginning of the Pro Cup Championship Series, where Morgan will be starting sixth in points, just 30 marks behind the leader of Clay Rogers. The four race shootout begins at the high banked tri-oval of Concord [N.C.] Speedway, and then it's off to the mid-west at Iowa Speedway on Sept. 19. Then to travel back to North Carolina to "The Rock" in Rockingham, N.C., on Oct. 10 and the season finale at South Boston, Va. on Oct. 31.
"Concord is kind of like our home track. I have a lot of laps there and would really like to get my first USAR win at this track," commented Morgan. "Our strongest track is going to be Iowa. It's a very demanding track, not only from an equipment stand point, but also from a driver standpoint. You have no room for error and you have to be on your marks, those are tracks that fit my style."
Morgan finds that his biggest obstacle in winning the Championship Series is his fellow competitor and the current Series point leader, Clay Rogers. Morgan plans to go for the glory at each remaining event, earn as many wins and points as he possibly can. He feels it's going to take more than consistency to pass and hold off Rogers in the four remaining events.
"Clay [Rogers] is a great driver and he's got a great team. I feel like the tracks we are going to are tracks that really play into his favor. For me, looking at his track record, he is going to be the one to shoot for," explained Morgan. "My approach is to go out to win, that's one of our biggest goals. No matter what, you've got to make as many points as you can early on. It's going to take as many top five finishes and wins as you can. You have to go into each race with no less than a winning attitude."
Come watch JP Morgan gun for his first Pro Cup victory at the Concord 250 which starts at 7:30 pm on Saturday, September 5 at Concord [N.C.] Speedway. You can also see all the action from the Concord event on your local FSN station on Sunday, October 25 at 11:30am.
