Five drivers just know "they'll win" at Lonesome Pine Raceway Virginia track is new to Hooters ProCup

Coeburn, VA - Will the real winner please stand up!

Former Lonesome Pine track champions Johnny Rumley, Charlie Ford, Jay Fogleman, Jeff Agnew and Stacy Vicars have all said the same thing when questioned about their racing plans for the Food City 250 scheduled for June 26 in Coeburn, VA ? "I'm going to win the Food City 250."

All five men are drivers on the United Speed Alliance Racing circuit, and all of them feel that the 3/8-mile track is theirs for the taking.

Fogleman, Durham, NC is currently third in Series points while Agnew, Copper Hill, VA is the defending Series champion. Ford is enjoying his finest year in the Series and the gentle Virginian (Charles City), as he is known, has his sights set squarely on Coeburn.

"Our KIDDE Thunderbird should by suited for this track," said Fogleman. "I've been looking forward to racing there. It's a track where I've won a lot of big Late Model Stock races."

Agnew, who won Lonesome Pine track championships in 1991-92, hasn't had a terrific sophomore season in the Hooters ProCup Series after winning both the Series and rookie titles in 1999. "I've won the last two or three big races that I've competed in at Lonesome Pine," said the soft spoken driver. "The key to winning at this track is handling." Agnew continues to serve as his own crew chief following the release of Roger Severa five races ago.

Fresh off of his first top-ten finish of the season (USA International Speedway) Ford said, "I've had a lot of success at Coeburn. I know the track like the back of my hand. This Sun Graphics Monte Carlo should be able to get around the place."

Rumley, Winston-Salem, NC has always run well at the facility and might be the hungriest of the five drivers. He is seeking his first Hooters ProCup win.

Vicars, who announced a five race deal for this year, is getting acquainted with the 3,400-pound, 510-horsepower steel bodied Hooter ProCup machines.

"They require a finesse style of driving acumen. But experience is everything at Lonesome Pine and our Monte Carlo has been running well this season. We should be a contender for the $8,000 winner's share," said Vicars who'll run for the Miller Beer "Rookie of the Year" title in 2000.

All five of these men have run extensively in the Late Model Stock Division at Lonesome Pine Raceway and while each lays claim to a possible victory, they'll be looking over their shoulders at current points leader "Super"Mario Gosselin, Lake Wales, FL, who has two consecutive victories and Michael Ritch, High Point, NC who is fourth in points with two wins in 1999. The pair have won over half of the 39 races run since 1997. Gosselin has 13 wins while Ritch has nine.

Newcomers Mardy Lindley, Taylors, SC and Steven Christian, Buford, GA are in a heated battle for the $10,000 Miller Beer "Rookie of the Year" Award and should be joined in qualifying by drivers Bobby Gill, Dalton, GA, second in points, Derrick Kelley, Auburndale, FL, Mike Laughlin, Jr., Simpsonville, SC, Mart Nesbitt, Asheville, NC and Toby Porter, Greenville, SC. Thirty-two drivers will start.

In addition to the 250-lap ProCup feature, local Late Model Stock Cars will run a 100-lap race.

ProCup qualifying begins at 3 p.m. As is the tradition with the Hooters ProCup Series, drivers will sign autographs at 6 p.m.

The Speedvision Network airs all 20 races of the $1.5 million series. The Food City 250 will be the first event at Lonesome Pine Raceway to receive national television exposure.

The $76,850 Hooters ProCup race is the ninth of the year and will receive the green flag at 7 p.m. For track or series information dial: 540-395-3338. Lonesome Pine Raceway is located in Coeburn, VA 5.5 miles east of US 23 on Alt US 58, then 0.8 miles SE on SR 813.
