Huffman Holds Narrow Lead at Championship Series Makes Second Stop at MMS

Longs, SC - For the second consecutive year, Mansfield Motorsports Speedway will host a Hooters Pro Cup Championship Series event. And from the looks of the regular-season race held there earlier this year, several surprises could be in store for the fans in the Alan Kulwicki Memorial Lucas Oil 250, the second stop of the five-race playoff.

Joey Logano, driver of the No. 51n Joe Gibbs Racing Oil Ford, set a new record as the youngest winner in the history of the Series with his triumph in June, but the 15-year-old driver will have to contend with over 40 other drivers qualified to participate in the event.

The first Championship Series event offered many surprises including Joe Gaita getting his first win of the season and third overall after he became the only leader of the race not to experience problems. More importantly, the win vaulted him from 17th place in the Championship Standing to third in just one race after many of the front runners entering Jennerstown had what could be called a long and rough day.

Shane Huffman, Benny Gordon, Clay Rogers, Mark McFarland, Woody Howard, Jeff Agnew and Bobby Gill all experienced problems at the season-opener at Jennerstown Speedway two weeks ago while sitting in the top-10 entering the Championship Series. Huffman rebounded from motor problems in practice to collect a respectable 11th-place finish and hold on to the points lead by just one point over Gordon (296-295).

After a lackluster 13th-place effort at Jennerstown, Gordon is happy going back to Mansfield as he won both races held there in 2004 and finished eighth this past spring.

This year's spring race at Mansfield featured 15 cars finishing on the lead lap at the end of the competitive race and everyone involved expects another close finish. Logano was able to take the lead after Huffman was assessed a rough driving penalty when he and Agnew got together racing for the lead late in the race. Logano held off Mardy Lindley and Mike Laughlin, Jr. on a green-white-checkered for the win.

The race featured six Southern Division drivers who entered the race to get seat time in preparation for the Championship Series event. Defending Hooters Pro Cup Series champion Clay Rogers was the highest-finishing invader, coming home in the ninth.

The race will be one of five Championship Series events named after each of the four men who perished in the plane crash in 1993. This raced, named after the 1992 Winston Cup Series champion Alan Kulwicki, is to honor the memory of the driver who was sponsored by Hooters during his championship run. Kulwicki, along with Charlie Campbell, Dan Duncan and Mark Brooks, perished in a plane crash on their way to Bristol Motor Speedway. The Hooters Pro Cup Series was created to honor their memory and each of the races in the Championship Series is used to honor each man for their accomplishments.

In addition to the 250-lap Hooters Pro Cup Series race the local E-Modifieds will run a 25-lap feature after the Pro Cup event. Qualifying for the Pro Cup cars will be at 3:30 p.m. with an on-track autograph session scheduled for 4:45 p.m. and the green flag for the Alan Kulwicki Memorial Lucas Oil 250 is 6 p.m. For ticket information, please contact Mansfield Motorsports Speedway at 800-424-0688.
