Myrtle Beach prepares for Championship Series.
Fayetteville, GA-- As the 2002 USAR Hooters ProCup Series continues its Championship Series, the five-race play-off type format will bring over 50 drivers for the first race on a Southern Division track on Saturday, October 19th for the running of Mark Brooks Memorial Lucas Oil 250 presented by Bryant Heating & Cooling. The race will be the third of five in the series to determine the 2002 USAR Hooters ProCup Series National Champion.
The Championship Series began last month in Winchester, Indiana and featured a number of surprises. Bobby Gill and Brian Ross entered the Championship Series as number one seeds in the five-race format and each suffered problems. Gill suffered his first DNF since 2000 when his Ford was forced into the pits on lap 30 with mechanical problems. Ross was collected in an on-track accident and limped home with a 23rd-place finish.
Gill rebounded with a top-five finish at Jennerstown while Ross suffered mechanical problems during the second race in the Championship Series. One of the biggest surprises of the Championship Series has been Clay Rogers. Rogers enters Myrtle Beach Speedway as the point leader with an 18-piont advantage over Shane Huffman and 21 point lead over Gill.
Several drivers call Myrtle Beach Speedway home and one of those drivers is Hal Goodson. Goodson has won two career Hooters ProCup Series races at the track including the Championship Series event last year. The Dalrington, SC driver hopes to return to victory lane once again this year and hopes being close to home will help his Black's Tire Service team.
"It is always nice to race in front of your family and friends," said Goodson."Our focus as a team will be the same as always in that we come to the track to run well, concentrate on pit stops and racing. I will get a chance to say hey to a lot of my family and friends during the day as they visit us before the race."
Goodson will also be racing with RBR Enterprises teammate Jason Sarvis. Sarvis, who has won twice this season, would enjoy a good run in front of his hometown crowd.
"I live five minutes away from the track so we are really looking forward to coming back in October," Sarvis said."We have always run well there and hopefully we can keep our momentum from Winchester going to Myrtle Beach. It will be a tough race and with all of the good Northern Division cars joining us in the South, it will be a demanding race."
One Northern Division driver looking forward to Myrtle Beach Speedway is Mardy Lindley. Lindley won at Myrtle Beach Speedway in May of 2000. Michael Ritch, who returned to full-time competition in the USAR Hooters ProCup Series also has won at the track sweeping both races in 1998.
