Radford, VA- Drivers are preparing to run the tight bull ring at New River Valley Speedway this weekend for the running of the Kroger 250 presented by Pepsi.
"This track is a real small, real tight track. Your setup has got to be just right to be successful and to win at New River Valley," said Mario Gosselin, driver of the #10 Carter Grandle Ford. " We have won here before, even though we finished 15th last year due to bringing a brand new car to this track and it was a uphill battle the whole day."
"This year has been an okay year so far for us, but we have struggled a lot. The goal of this team is to escape New River Valley with a top-three finish and still win the championship," said the driver, who is currently ninth in points. Gosselin won the Hooters ProCup championship once in his career, claiming the check in 1997. He also holds the record of the most career wins in a USAR Hooters ProCup car with 16 in four years of competition in the Series.
One competitor looking to nab a few records is Mart Nesbitt, driver of the #30 Blue Cross Blue Shield Chevrolet. " So far this year we have had a lot of missed opportunities, but the team is still holding on and doing a great job at the track." The team recorded a third-place finish this year at Hickory Motor Speedway, when the driver qualified the car on the outside front row.
"My goal for the rest of the year is to finish in the top 10 in points; seventh or eighth place would not be bad either," said Nesbitt. It's a pretty reasonable goal to achieve since he is currently 11th in the Southern Division standings.
"I always look forward to running at New River Valley Speedway because they tend to have the best fans. As far as what we can do for this race, I feel real optimistic about this track because it is kind of a cross between Hickory Motor Speedway and Lonesome Pine Raceway and the team does real well at those tracks," explained Nesbitt.
Stephanie Carroll, promoter at New River Valley Speedway, is also looking forward to the fourth appearance of the USAR Series. " The Series always brings the best events and as a result of that, the fans always tend to enjoy themselves. We are looking forward to seeing Jeff Agnew, Jay Fogleman, Brian Vickers, and the guys that started their racing career here at New River Valley Speedway return to their home track."
Practice begins for the Kroger 250 presented by Pepsi at 11 a.m., with grandstands opening at 3 p.m. and qualifying beginning at 5 p.m. The autograph session begins at 6 p.m., and the green flag is scheduled to wave at 7 p.m., followed by the local Late Model division.
