Peach State Speedway Welcomes the Hooters ProCup Series

Fayetteville, GA (7/31/00) As the 2000 season for the United Speed Alliance Racing Hooters ProCup Series reaches its halfway point, several tracks on the current schedule are prepared for their second Hooters ProCup race of the season. The series returns to the "Peach State" of Georgia this weekend for the running of the Miller Lite 250 presented by Williams Bros. Lumber Co. The one-half mile facility, located in Jefferson, Georgia (about 60 miles north of Atlanta), has hosted seven events in the history of the four year-old series. The only track to host more events has been USA International Speedway in Lakeland, Florida. The first half of the season has been dominated by driver Bobby Gill. The defending series champion has led more laps than anyone this season (718) and has won six of the first 10 races this year. Gill has also already won over $70,000 in 2000, easily doubling the winnings of Mardy Lindley, who stands second with over $34,000 in winnings. As the second half of the season begins, one driver looks to collect his first career win in the series. Steven Christian, who races out of nearby Buford, GA, won the Discount Auto Parts Pole in the May race. He led the first 45 laps of the race and led again later in the event for a solid third-place finish which vaulted him and his Lucas Oil Products Chevy into the top- 10 (third) in points, where he has remained. Another driver looking for a strong run is the driver of the Hooters Ford, Bill Plemons, Jr. from Locust Grove, GA. The veteran is also looking for his first career Hooters ProCup Series win and he recently won a pole position competing in a late model event at the fast track. Plemons, who has won a pole position this season, will look to get that first win in front of his family and friends. A driver to watch at Peach State Speedway is series veteran Marty Ward. Ward, from Marietta, South Carolina, has collected all three of his Hooters ProCup Series wins at Peach State, including both events at the track in 1999. Ward collected his season-best starting position of fourth in May and hopes a return to a track he has tasted success on will produce positive results this time around. The event will feature Miller Lite as the race sponsor. Miller Lite sponsors the Miller Lite Rookie of the Year award. Entering this weekend’s Miller Lite 250, Jon Wood has regained the lead he has held after seven of the first 10 races of the year. Brian Vickers, who became the only rookie driver to win this season when he won at USA International in June, moved into second place and Clay Rogers has used four consecutive top-five finishes to move into third place in the standings. Rogers won the Miller Lite Rookie of the Race Award at Peach State in May with his first top-five finish of the season. Gill, with the help of four straight wins, also claimed the points lead from Mario Gosselin after last week’s race at New River Valley Speedway. He now leads 31 points over Gosselin (1,531-1,500) and could tie Michael Ritch for the Hooters ProCup Series record for most wins in a season with his next victory. Ritch won seven races in 1998. Gill also passed Michael Ritch for second place on the Hooters ProCup Series career win list with 11 wins. For more information about the Miller Lite 250 presented by Williams Bros. Lumber Co. please contact Tim Southers, USAR Media Relations Director, at 770-719-0204.
